Me Like DIS

DIS magazine launched today. It’s onläne. It’s fashion. It’s art. It’s DIS.

Basically, I spent my whole day discovering their pages (pun intended). They first feature that caught my attention, was Multitasking. So many arms, so much to do. Check out the pictures and multiply your arms. Then, I found the CGI fashion story by Ryan Trecartin.

I got more and more disoriented, lost in the DIS pages.

Finally, I clicked on A Sunday With Susan. OMG, I screamed in excitement and wet myself (downstairs). The fashion shoot features Rumi Missabu (of The Cockettes) and Donna Personna (amongst others) in Susan Cianciolo dresses. Eons ago, I’ve written a quick blurb about Susan. Here are just 3 pictures from DIS magazine, be sure to check the whole story including a Q&A at the end:

I had never heard of Donna Personna before. But after watching her youtube promo reel, Join The Donna Party, I’m a fan forever. She also performs at one of my favourite bars EVER, Aunt Charlies Lounge in San Francisco. Here are some mini pics I took at ACL in June 2004: one and two. I have to go back soon. Like NOEWWW.

Also, Ryan Trecartin will be in Toronto next week for an artist talk on Tuesday and an opening at The Powerplant on Thursday.

Chit Chat with J

My favourite Canadian designer & friend Jeremy Laing is showing his new Autumn 2009 collection at New York Fashion week, February 15. Head over to papermag.com for a quick chit chat with J.
It will surely be a stunning runway, as another favourite, the dance-disco-house band New Feelings will be playing for the show.

Proddy’s ABC of Online Shopping

As you may or may not know, living in Canada sometimes feels a little bit like living in a fashion desert. After 3 years in Toronto, I have turned it into a virtue. After hours, days, months on the interwebz, I have found my favourite online stores. Of course, I had to select the shops based on their Bernhard Willhelm and Martin Margiela availability.

The list below will give you an unparalleled view on the websites I spend most of my time at. Click. Click. Click. Shopping Cart. Cart. Cart. Buy. Bought. Bought.
And when you find yourself buying from the stores, just think of it as your own personal economy stimulus plan.
Pump the money back into the financial system!

Proddy: Buy. Bought. Bought.

# B Store
Mary introduced me to b-store. We met up in London and paid the b a visit. It was such a pleasurable experience, because the Bernhard truck had just unloaded a couple of Muumuus (pictured above & below). After leaving London, I called Kirk & Matthew a week later and ordered another BW fix. Brilliant service & always some hot shit to look at.

# Corner, The
A sister site to yoox.com, The Corner sells the most recent menswear collections. I’m still not sure why they don’t ship to Canada (yoox.com does). I sent them an email once a month asking about shipment to Toronto but to no avail. I hate them a little bit. What I usually do is get my order shipped to Germany and a friend has to FedEx it to my place.
Another weird thing is that some of the labels are available in European countries but not in the US, for instance Bernhard. So make sure you select different countries to get the whole experience. Make it work.
It looks like they will be getting Walter van Beirendonck for summer. Bernhard, Margiela, Raf Simons, Viktor & Rolf are already there.

# Doshaburi
One of my favourites. Doshaburi is from Japan and they have a shop in Barcelona, where they ship from. When I went to the store last summer, there was always a very friendly Japanese woman working there, helping me with my hysterical questions. One of the best Bernhard Willhelm (men’s only) sites, they carry so many more exciting designers, it would take me months to list them all. Last time I ordered, I got a Bernhard poster / look book thing with my sweater. Amazing. Buy something now!

# Far Fetched
One stop for 20 shops in old Europe. Haven’t gotten anything fetched yet. Can’t be long. B Store is part of Far Fetch, too, so you can actually shop with them twice. Neat.

# Fatal
I love Fatal, based in Minneapolis of all places, but have to say their sale is not the best. Most of the clothing gets reduced by 30% only. But who cares? I got my beautiful & humongous Bernhard pot scarf (picture above & below), that I wore as a dress from them.

# Good Hood
I haven’t personally ordered anything from Good Hood, but I like their site and selections. That’s easy, because there are a couple of Bernhard women’s dresses that I would like to get my mittens on.

# Kron Kron
From Reykjavik. In the summer, they had wonderful dip dye Bernhard dresses. They are sold out now & I can’t wait for the new deliveries. Click them daily.

# Oki Ni
They have some Margiela, Raf Simons etc. The current specialty is the Opening Ceremony Collection by Wong Kar Wai. Get yourself some film shirts.

# Reborn
Based in the old town of Montreal, this is the only Canadian store on the list. Birgit and myself stopped by the lovely store last year & threw some serious dough at the welcoming sales people. My favourites lines here are Bless & Zibskov. Mary loves herself some Complex Geometries. Reborn also has the Six Scents perfume collection; therefore they are the only place in Canada where you can get Wicken 3000.

# Seven
The Bernhard usually sells out pretty quick at this New York store. If you want a specific piece, you need to call them around the time when the new collections arrive and get pictures sent BEFORE they post them to the website. Otherwise, the best stuff is already gone. You snooze, you loose.

# 10 Corso Como
I can’t wait from 10 Corso Como to open their online boutique. Comme des Garcons galore. Went to their shop a couple of years ago, when I was in Tokyo. I want to go again, right NOW.

Proddy: Buy. Kaufen. Acheter.

I haven’t included eluxury.com in the list above as they only ship within the US and you have to use an US credit card. Thank you very much. However, I have to admit, that I ordered a MMM necklace from them last year, and had to use a service company from Florida that bought it on my behalf and forwarded the precious metal to me. There is always a way to get the item you need!

Apart from all the online stores, I can recommend randomly calling Margiela boutiques around the world to ask about products you really need. For instance, my dear friend Mary Messhausen loves the diamond necklace, bracelet and ring (pictured below)! Call them NOW.
I personally like to chat with Colin from the NYC Margiela boutique. He is very friendly and last time I was at the store, his arm was broken, which added some extra cute clumsiness.

Back when I lived in Germany, I only shopped at Heimat. If you’re ever in Cologne, you have to pay them a visit. Andy and Andreas are in charge of my favourite store in Germany & they publish the amazing Mode Depesche, for whom I did an interview with Jean-Paul Lespagnard and other articles.

MMM Diamonds

So now, keep the economy going and buy. bought. bought.

Dress You Up

I’ve been doing some Madonna research lately (more on that later) and came across this short clip of Madonna performing Dress You Up at Keith Haring’s Party of Life in May 1984 at the Paradise Garage, almost 6 months before the Like A Virgin album was released.

By Keith Haring (source):
“In the spring of 1984, it’s time for my birthday, and I stage what I call my Party of Life event. I want to make this into quite a grand affair. The fact is, I’m now making a certain amount of money and I feel a certain guilt about it, and I want to share it with my friends… you know, sharing the wealth! So I plan this big party, which is for my birthday, but not on my birthday.

I ask Madonna if she could sing at the party and she agrees. As a matter of fact, she had been to my studio just days earlier to play me some cuts from her new album ‘Like A Virgin.’, at which time hadn’t come out yet. I immediately liked “Dress You Up” and “Like a Virgin”, and we decide she’ll sing these two songs at the party. While we’re hearing these songs, I do a painting on Madonna’s leather jacket which she wears to the party. Madonna decides that she wants to sing these two songs on a brass bed covered with frilly material and strewn with white roses.

I decide to hold the party at Paradise Garage, because it continues to be my clubhouse and the coolest club in New York. Although only open weekends, I persuade the owner to let me hire the club out on a Wednesday night. I now ask LAII ( and myself and other friends of Keith ) to help me decorate the place. We make these huge cotton banners, which we spray paint in fluorescent colors. We hang these around the club. We also hang fluorescent streamers everywhere, and in another room we erect these huge fluorescent pillars and vases with flowers in them. We also hang some of my huge vinyl tarps so that the event also turns into a big exhibition.” (Read the full text)

Berlin Alexanderplatz

Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s television miniseries Berlin Alexanderplatz is based on the Alfred Döblin classic 1929 novel of the underclass in Berlin during the Weimar Republic. Fassbinder details a mammoth portrait of a common man struggling to survive in a viciously uncommon time. It was first broadcast in Germany in 1980.

RWF had a longstanding obsession with the novel. For instance, in his 1975 movie Fox and his Friends (Faustrecht der Freiheit), the main character played by Fassbinder himself, is named after the Berlin Alexanderplatz protagonist, Franz Biberkopf (Frank Beaverhead).

Remastered in 2006, the series is finally available as a DVD box set from The Criterion Collection with English subtitles or through SZ Cinemathek in Germany.

PS1 in New York is screening the more than 15-hour epic in 14 screening rooms – one for each episode of the film through January 2008.

Berlin Alexanderplatz

Fassbinder on Berlin Alexanderplatz:

Reality or Concept?

What was going on at the Paradise Garage? I found the picture below in the booklet of this release. I was a bit puzzled. Why is there a huge Robin Williams album cover at Larry Levan’s dj booth?

Now here comes the nerdy part. I googled Robin Williams to find our more about this. It is actually the artwork of Robin Williams’ 1979 comedy album, Reality…What A Concept. Not sure, if I should give it a listen, but I’m intrigued.

Still, the only funny Robin Williams is the spoof of Patch Adams in Cecil B. Demented.

Postcards from New York

Susan Cianciolo

For a few years, Superschum and friends organized a small party truck for the gay pride parade in Frankfurt. All the people involved in the party wore the same t-shirt. One year, the theme was Role Model and everyone could choose their own role model to be printed on the shirt.
Toffi and I are still sad, that we both didn’t choose Mariah, we should have gotten the Rainbow album cover on our shirts. But that’s another story.

Anyway, my dear friend Steffi chose Susan Cianciolo as her Role Model. Steffi sometimes did clothes and patchwork blankets, so Susan was an inspiration to her. Now, I finally heard about her again.

Susan Cianciolo does a fashion line for Cone Denim. The designs will be on display at Sears Peyton Gallery in New York (210 11th Ave., Suite 802) from Sept 6 to 20 and in L.A. afterwards. (via papermag)

I am very curious about this and wish I could make it. Hope to get some pictures soon.

Into Sunshine

I was very happy when I found the reissue of the Walking Into Sunshine 12″ by UK group Central Line in New York. The 1981 hit has a special Larry Levan mix on the A-side.
The song was later sampled by LL Cool J for Jingling Baby (watch his party video, go ahead, baby).

Yesterday was wonderful weather in Toronto and I sang the lyrics all around town, today the rain is back. What did I do wrong?

Limited: Central Line – Walking Into Sunhsine (Larry Levan Mix)

Too much rainy days, rainy days
Found so much lazy ways, lazy ways
I’ve got to get away, oooh, baby
This kind of life is not for me

I don’t want a fuss, want a fight
I’m checkin’ in to book my early flight
I’ve got to get away to see what’s right for me

Walking by the sea (Go walking by the sea)
That’s when I’ll be free (Don’t want to hurry me)
I can do as I please when my mind is at ease
And I won’t be worried at all

I need a holiday to get away from the rush
I got to get away from the rush
Off the week if gold is cheap
I hop and fly away where the sun always shines
Eight days a week

‘Cause there’ll be sunshine
Yes, I’ll be walking into sunshine (Sunshine)
Give me the sun (Sunshine)
So all my rainy days will all be gone

New York Moments

I am not especially keen on flying but my flight from New York to Toronto was wonderful. Clear and sunny views of Manhattan, the Niagara Falls and Toronto included. I love flying.

Sunday evening we went to Danny Krivit’s birthday party at Pacha. When we left the club a cab stopped conveniently right in front of us. We got in on one side and a man left the car on the other side. As I was the last one to get in the cab, he passed my way. I only noticed him, when he climbed the stairs to Pacha. It was Mel Cheren, whose (very schwül) autobiography I am currently reading, sporting a black bomber jacket with the Paradise Garage logo embroidered on the back.
I was quite tired and not fast enough to talk to him about the book or that I would like to do an interview. Before I got my mind together he vanished into the club.

Mariah's CribSo, I spent the remaining hours of my New York trip stalking Mariah and Yoko.

I guess everyone who reads this site has seen Mariah’s MTV Cribs episode (be sure to watch the bonus footage) as I have mentioned it in 1543 posts. Now see the building where she has a tri-level penthouse from the outside. Its in Tribeca and many thanks to my well informed friend.

Yoko's CribHere are pictures of the Dakota building, where Yoko still has an apartment, and the Strawberry Fields Memorial.

MTV should get her to do a Crib’s episode. This would be so fabulous! I am wondering if she still has John’s glasses, which he was wearing when he was murdered, lying at the windowsill.

Season of Glass.

Imagine.
