Our drag messes Peg Zilla and Monster have re-located to Melbourne. They are so far down under but they’re still up in the WilderMess. Check out the video that they shot on a day off from rehab.
On Saturday, Mary Messhausen and myself saw Pearls Over Shanghai, the reproduction of the musical by The Cockettes. The updated version is brought back to the stage 40 years after its debut by The Thrillpeddlers in collaboration with some of the original Cockettes members.
It was great to see original composer Richard “œScrumbly” Koldewyn on the piano and original Cockette Rumi Missabu reprising his role as the evil Madame Gin Sling (photo below). It is such a fun and exciting show, including an opium induced scene played in the dark. Our favourite song is “Apples and Won Ton” sung by Lili Frustrata.
Pearls Over Shanghai is playing in San Francisco until August 1st.
The Thrillpeddlers are currently also playing Hot Greeks, which was the only other scripted book musical by The Cockettes. Now I wish I had seen this one too.
One of the highlights of the Live Film! Jack Smith! festival of the arsenal cinema in Berlin was seeing and meeting legendary underground superstar Mario Montez, who had not appeared in public for 30 years. Mario started his career with the Jack Smith films Flaming Creatures (as Dolores Flores) and Normal Love before becoming one of he first Warhol superstars.
With Jack Smith, he shared a fascination of 1950’s/60’s gay camp icon Maria Montez, who became the source of inspiration for Mario’s drag name.
The next few photos have images from Mario Montez’ scrapbook projected in the backdrop. The first two are Maria Montez movie posters.
There is a rare screening of Viola Klein’s movie Raw. Doc Nancy, Toffi and myself play Hortense, Phyllis and Susan, who live in a self-supporting environment, far away from their former stage, the Vanity Ballroom.
Get tickets for this program Friday, May 15th, 7:45pm.
After that, you should just stay at Cinecycle for a screening of The Beaver Trilogy.
Then, take a cab to The Beaver for the afterparty. Mary Messhausen is hosting, Fay Slift is performing with M+M, Will Munro and Alex W are djing. You don’t want to miss that.
Mary and myself have been asked to come up with a project for Pride Toronto. It looks like we’re going to provide nasty entertainment in the afternoon of Saturday, June 27. Today, we’ve sent in our biography:
Mary Messhausen and produzentin were found wandering hand-in-hand
through the woods by a travelling circus troupe at the age of 4.
Raised by the Bearded Lady, these girls learned their tricks by
hustling and bustling from the outskirts of St. John’s to the inner
harbour of Victoria.
Mary and produzentin, 19 and 20 respectively, currently reside in
And on the same evening, it is PrideNuts at The Beaver. Can you spell D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R ?
Look closely at the picture above and get some make up tips from Candy. And watch the trailer to the upcoming documentary about Ms Darling, including a short interview clip with John Waters.
She was baptized James Lawrence Slattery in 1944 but reinvented herself as Candy Darling in the late 1960s after leaving suburban Long Island for the streets of the West Village, a place in the back room at Max”™s Kansas City and a role as muse.
She hung out with artists like Andy Warhol and crossed paths with musicians like David Bowie. The filmmaker Paul Morrissey put her in two of his movies. Lou Reed wrote the Velvet Underground song “œCandy Says” with her in mind and included a verse about her in his “œWalk on the Wild Side.”
It was as a teenager in the summer of 1966 that Mr. Newton first met Candy Darling, a self-styled transgender glamour girl. (…) The two soon became friends and roommates, living together in Manhattan and Brooklyn until 1974, when she died of Hodgkin”™s lymphoma at 29.
(…) In 1997 his remembrance of his friend, “œMy Face for the World to See,” was published. And more recently he began working with others on a documentary, “œBeautiful Darling: The Life and Times of Candy Darling, Andy Warhol Superstar,” which he said was scheduled to be shown in theaters and broadcast on the Sundance Channel near the end of this year.

My second Dame Edna post in a week, who knew?
“I have had a little cosmetic surgery. I had some crow’s feet added to my eyes because people said that I looked too young.”
“Does the ageing process worry me? Yes, it will do, when I start to age. Meanwhile, it worries me in other people because I have to keep repeating myself, talk louder and help them out of their chairs. And in my mother’s case purée her meals.
I invented diets and my most successful one is my famous “All Cake Diet”, exclusively of yummy cakes finally inducing nausea and projectile vomiting which is nature’s most effective weight-loss programme.”
Start the new year with the spectacular limited edition Dame Edna Mac Cosmetics line. There’s lots of mauve and sparkles. Don’t sleep on it.
Trannyshack, the long-running weekly drag-show in San Francisco, founded by Heklina is closing the doors. They have a Kiss Off Party on August 23rd featuring their greatest performers and special guests including Lady Bunny and Lady Miss Kier.
I couldn’t find my most memorable performances online, featuring a drag zombie dancing to Beyonce or blood pouring down a bucket onto the drag queen in a stars and strips bathing suit lip-syncing Irene Cara’s Flashdance, What A Feeling… Anyway, check out Heklina’s and Glamamore’s version of All Is Full of Love:
What are your thoughts on Trannyshack closing its doors as a weekly event?
Lady Bunny: “With all of those hags out of work I am terribly concerned for the safety and sanitation of San Francisco”™s streets!”
Below are a few quotes from the book Candy Darling by Candy Darling, published 1992 through Hanuman. During the course of a day Candy committed her thoughts to a soft-covered notebook writing about things such as recipes, drafts of letters, makeup tips, addresses, etc. Then, there are pages of speculation; words meant to be used as a rebuke or compliment, dialogue to be stored away for future use – perhaps for a play she was writing, jokes:
All I could concentrate on for the rest of the morning was the grunting and groaning and the sounds ofthe bed creaking. Gil left around 9 a.m. I was still too stunned to sleep, being persecuted to capacity. As Mr. Right was going out of the door he saw that I was not asleep and said goodbye. His face seemed to be saying to me it’s really you I love mentally it was all you. But then I am not mentally well.
I know it hasn’t all been beer & pretzels for you either.
I see the day coming when the words femme and butch will be more commonly used. I mean to be used for heterosexuals not just for gay or bisexuals. Think of the intersting types.
Female-Heterosexual-type- Basic butch with femme overtones. the drag type

Basic femme – Butch overtones Greta Garbo
Basic femme – femme overtones M.M. L.T.

She feels insecure

The only law she never broke is the law of gravity.
The only security is health and the ability to adjust in life.
First of all please forgive me for not answering sooner. I’ve been so involved with my own identity, which has been so vague, and social commitments, basic living procedures and affairs of the heart that for a while I ceased to exist. Except for other people. (…)

Today, we spent a wonderful afternoon by the river Main. Doc Nancy was in her best mood when she got a ride on the BierBike, helping them cuties to keep the wheels spinning and the juices flowing. Who knew that chillin’ on a barrel could provide so much fun?
In next to no time, Doc Nancy will be back with her mathematical life counseling session. Get your burning questions ready because Doc Nancy will be happy to give you some valuable advice.
I have always thought that it is genius to fall down on the floor while dancing. Like an accident, stumble, fall, but quickly stand up, just to fall down again. In the middle of the dance floor, just to laugh about it. I did it a couple of times last Saturday, just that no one was dancing anymore.
The videos below are on a different level. Falling down never looked better.
Vogue Femme at the Philly Awards Ball two weeks ago (via):
Of course, I’m partial to the harlequin costumes.
The following clip of Tandi Iman Dupree has been all over the interwebs, but I thought it is a good fit. Still one of the best entrances and the exit is to the floor. From the Miss Black America pageant 2001:
Soooo, who’s going to travel to Bulgaria with me this summer to have a look at some of the countries magnificent Thracian monuments?
This is H.R.H. Princess Diandra. (via Lady Bunny)
Some older news by Michael Musto, Village Voice about H.R.H. Princess Diandra, so you can put her in the picture (no pun intended):
“HRH Princess Diandra (…) just tussled with David LaChapelle at Lucky Cheng’s, creating electromagnetic sound waves that had people running. The fab but excitable Diandra was mad that her image was cut out of a Rolling Stone group shot LaChapelle once took, so she tossed a drink in his face, using his eyeballs as martini olives. (Remember, Diandra’s the one who screamed “you hideous has-been woman” at Diana Ross during Ross’s last concert and was dragged off a platform by security.)”
The young Amanda says: “I don’t have any time to work, cause I’m to busy getting ready all the time or going out.”
More Leigh Bowery movies at showstudio.com. The voice overs are a bit spooky but I love the outfits in #2 and #4. (Thanks Brad).
In time for the Frankfurt Gay Pride weekend I would like to quote RuPaul:
sissies are under fire around the world and we must fight back! we shall retaliate the only way we know how… like the powerful butch queens that we are, with our heads held high and looking flawless. remember, it was the queens who started the GAY RIGHTS MOVEMENT, not the “straight acting” cowards.
And I like the drag queen chant sung during the Stonewall riots:
We are the Stonewall girls
We wear our hair in curls
We wear no underwear
We show our pubic hair…
We wear our dungarees
Above our nelly knees!
Although, I haven’t seen any of his drag movies, I’m also looking forward to see Gypsy Rose Lee! How womanly can Johnny be?

I adore Juanita More since 1999.
This week, I finally took some pictures.

Aunt Charlie’s Lounge is my favourite bar in San Francisco. They have drag shows every Friday and Saturday, sometimes charity shows on Sundays. The performances put me in a good mood every time I go.
On Thursdays they have a new party called "The Tubesteak Connection" (mmmhh, sounds great!) which I still have to check out.
What I find is pleasing and I’m feeling fine
