23 April 2008 | Cannes 61

Charlie Kaufman is also in the running with his directorial debut Synecdoche, New York - which sees Philip Seymour Hoffman attempting to build a life-size model of the Big Apple.

Kung Fu Panda, an animated comedy from Dreamworks with a voice cast boasting Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Lucy Liu and Dustin Hoffman, will also premiere on Cannes’ famous Croisette. (source)

For all those who aren’t AP English professors, a “synecdoche,” other than a clever play on Schenectady, where some of the film takes place, is a figure of speech in which a part is used to describe the whole or the whole is used to describe a part (think “threads” for clothes, or “the law” for a police officer). It’s representative shorthand. (source)

I’m a little bit excited about the Charlie Kaufman movie mainly because I liked his screenplay for Human Nature, directed by Michel Gondry. Watch the trailer below.

14 March 2008 | Feel Free - Give Some Ac ck - Problem - You Got My

Let me start the seasonal chart blog with a list of second-hand vinyl I bought recently, 90ties house at its best:
D-Influence - No Illusions (MK’s Dumb Dub) - EastWest Records
Janet Jackson - Go Deep (Masters At Work Vocal Deep Disco Dub) - Virgin
Jeanne Harris - Just Another Man (Squeeze & Tease Me Mix) - Studio Records
Ceybil - Love So Special (Extended Original Underground Mix) - Atlantic

I had never heard the Mark Kinchen remix of No Illusions. I immediately fell in love with the vocals, the beats, shouts & groans. And so can you.

Cop the song: No Illusions (MK’s Dumb Dub).

  1. K. Hand - Feel Free - Acacia
Kelli Hand released 5 Cd’s of her remixes, often based on short vocal samples of deep house classics. Hysterical. Feel Free is my favourite track. I Can’t Take You Leaving Me, Reaction, I’ll Never Let You Down and Just Want You Back are also great. And many more. Viola introduced me to Kelli a while back: Do You Love Me starts with a fairground announcer shouting: “Jetzt bring’ ma wieder Schwung in die Kiste. Hey, ab geht die Post. Let’s Go. Let’s Fetz. Volle Pulle. Volle Power. Super.”
  2. Flora Cruz - Overcome EP - Mixtape Sessions Music
  3. Terence Parker - I’m Happy (Ron Carroll’s BMC Get Down Vocal Mix) feat. Bishop Edmound Griffin Sr - Superb
    First burner from Superb.
  4. The Anointed Pace Sisters - High Praise (Spen & Thommy Davis Dub Mix) - Superb
Up. Lift Him up. Up. Up. I could live without the “hands together” chants but anyway. Lift Him up.
  5. Mary J. Blige - Just Fine (Jovonn Remix) - Promo
Heard it first on Aaron-Carl’s weekly radio show. So Hot.
  6. Chaz Jankel - Get Myself Together (Hercules & Love Affair House Mix) - Tirk
  7. Roisin Murphy - You Know Me Better (Nightmoves Remix) - EMI
Listen to the soon to be released mix on Roisin’s remix myspace.
  8. Chic - I Want Your Love (Todd Terje Edit)
  9. Hercules & Love Affair - Blind (Hercules Club Mix & Frankie Knuckles Remix) - DFA
I’m ready for the next single already, which hopefully has a Marc Kinchen mix.
  10. Kalup Linzy - Asshole (Dance Remix)
  11. Colette - About Us (Derrick Carter’s B.H.Q. Vocal) - Om
    Has a touch of Kylie.
  12. Guy Robin Feat. Anthony Moriah - Bless You Brother (Underground Mix) - Hustle Music
  13. Mark Grant - Guessing Again (Yass Remix) feat. Russoul - Suburban
  14. Inner City - Pennies From Heaven (Slow To Speak Mix) - Virgin
This is basically an edit of two previously available mixes: Deep Reese Mix & Kevin’s Tunnel Mix.
  15. Jesus Jackson - Damn (Jacob London Remix) - Physical Graffiti
Funky Prince sounds on the Strictly Rhythm spin-off.

17 October 2007 | Drop It Like A Hot Potato

The Overpowered album by Roisin Murphy was finally released this week. A special limited edition double coloured LP is going to follow in November. It’s the pop-dance-electro-disco (whatever you want to call it) album for fall. My favourite song seems to change every other day, right now it is Body Language, which you can not listen to here but here.

  1. Aaron-Carl and DJ E. Dubb - The Door (Original Mix) - Wallshaker
There is nothing better than an angry Aaron-Carl song.
“I don’t want you no more. Pack your shit. Here’s the door.”
  2. Jill Scott - Hate On Me (Shelter Vocal) - Restricted Access
Remixed by Quentin Harris. I’m always in on hater lyrics.
  3. Chuck Love - Beatdown (Jimpster Mix) - OM
If you can’t get enough of the forward pushing Jimpster sound, I suggest his remix of 400 Years by Bob Marley and the Wailers. Trippin’.
  4. Kanye West feat. Dwele - Flashing Lights - Roc-A-Fella
I still love the synth stabs on this one so much. It is the next single off Graduation. Is this the first time paparazzi is rhymed with Nazi?
“Till I get flashed by the paparazzi
    Damn, these nigga’s got me,
I hate these nigga’s more than the Nazis”
  5. Moodymann - I’d Rather Be Lonely - KDJ
  6. Grand High Priest - Long Time Coming (GHP Vocal) - Re-House
Remix of A Change Is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke.
  7. Veronique - Use Me (Sunday Morning Dub, Afterhours Mix) - Wallshaker
Another stompin’ AC production. The dub is quite peak hour, for later or earlier, there is the Afterhours Mix.
  8. Marlon D - Jesus Creates Sound (Main Mix) - Strictly Rhythm
Don’t you love the cheesy “This is a journey into sound” sample, the hi-hats and cymbal clashes?
  9. Yass - He Reigns (Main) - Purple Music
    Gospel in da house.
  10. Marvin Gaye - Music (Karizma Remix) - Rotgut Records

19 July 2007 | Keeping Summer Hot

This looks more like a link dump than charts. Please bare with me.

without makeup

  1. The Brand New Heavies - Let’s Do It Again (Kenny Dope O-Gutta Remix) - Dope Wax
After the remixes for “I Don’t Know Why (I Love You)“, here’s another stomper.
  2. Grand High Priest - Mixdown - Strictly Rhythm
One of the first new releases on the relaunched Strictly Rhythm label. This instrumental track is a thunderstorm of hand claps and cowbells. Another highlight on the sampler is Quentin Harris feat. Cordell McClary - U Don’t Know. Both songs are now available on separate records, too.
  3. Marcus Mixx - Without Makeup (Ron Hardy Mix) - Let’s Pet Puppies
More Chicago house. Just recently found this record of previously unreleased Ron Hardy mixes. The label caught my attention: Chicago without Makeup. Dark handclaps.
  4. Feist - My Moon My Man (Boys Noize Classic Remix) - EMI
  5. Roisin Murphy - Overpowered (Seamus Haji Remix) - EMI
  6. Simian Mobile Disco - I Believe (Prins Thomas Diskomiks) - Wichita
  7. CSS - Let’s Make Love and Listen To Death From Above (Hot Chip Remix) - WEA
Very dramatic Hot Chip mix that turns around half way through.
  8. Tracey Thorn - Raise the Roof (Cagedbaby Remix) - EMI
  9. Osunlade - Queen’s Battle - Strictly Rhythm
From the Osunlade album. “Get that shit off my face.”
  10. Justin Timberlake - Love Stoned (Justice Remix) - Jive
I heard Final Fantasy did the strings on that one. No? Anyway, can’t wait for a live version by Owen.
  11. 2raumwohnung - Ja (Just Us Remix) - It Sounds
The lyrics make me cringe but the La Koehncke mix makes it all good.
  12. Chin Chin - Appetite (Chicken Lips Extended Vocal Mix) - Dialect Recordings
  13. Snax - Honeymoon’s Over (Konrad Black Remix) - Fine Music
Maybe I even like the original version better, not sure.
  14. DJ Camacho - Me (Original Demo Mix By D Camacho) feat. Janae Jordan - 157 Shelter Records
“I’d like a man not a boy who thinks he can understand what it is to be with a woman like me.”
  15. Prince - Future Baby Mama - Columbia
I like that Future Baby Mama. I bet you want to listen to the full song after you listened to that clip. Please.

08 May 2007 | Spring Outside My Window

New season - new charts.

Let me start with my favourite album for spring:
Kathy Diamond - Miss Diamond to You - Permanent Vacation
I first heard about Kathy Diamond through Rich. I thought: Finally, this is a Maurice Fulton production I can enjoy. Too bad that her myspace has one song only. You can preview all songs at juno. For more on Kathy, read this Village Voice review.

  1. Simbad - Supersonic Revelation (Marathon Men Remix) / Soul Fever (Karizma’s K2 Stomp Mix) - Raw Fusion Records (check their jukebox)
Double A side 12 inch deep house. Can’t decide which one is better.
  2. Aaron-Carl - Sky (Osunlade Yoruba Soul Vocal Mix) - Superb
Over the last year there have been a couple of remixes of this song. The recently released Osunlade mix is by far the best and deepest.
  3. DJ Spen & The MuthaFunkaz feat. Ann Nesby - It’s So Easy (MuthaFunkaz 12″ Vocal) - Code Red Recordings
The former lead vocalist of the Sounds of Blackness belts it out on this one. The ‘4 The Love Mix’ is kind of a new turn on ‘4 The Love of House’ with spoken lyrics by DJ Spen.
  4. Beck - Cellphone’s Dead (Villalobos Entlebuch Rmx) - Interscope
I’ve mumbled about this one before.
  5. Hercules and Love Affair - Athene - DFA
Soon to be released hit on DFA.
  6. Justus Köhncke - Elan (Prins Thomas Versjon) - Kompakt
Wonderful new version of the 2005 release featuring a live string section.
  7. Ruede Hagelstein - Yes, We’re Late - Freundinnen
Includes the cut up Benjamin remix of Sweaty Balls.
  8. Jay-J feat. Charlene Moore - With Him (Ron Carroll’s BMC Black Gospel Feel Edit) - Defected
Achtung: This is gospel house (who would have guessed).
  9. Hardsoul - My Life (Ron Carroll’s BMC 90’s Vocal Classical Mix) feat. Ron Carroll - Hardsoul
  10. Dajae & Bernard Badie - Tonight (Main Mix) - Tony Records
The song is available for listening on Dajae’s myspace since last year, it got a short promotional release on traxsource earlier this year and I hope it’s available on vinyl soon.
  11. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - Lil L.O.V.E. feat. Mariah Carey - Interscope
While we wait for the new Mariah album we can enjoy this slow banger. I always love her collaborations with Bone Thugs, after Breakdown and the remix of Don’t Forget About Us, this is the third one.
  12. Nelly Furtado - Say It Right (Dummies Remix) - Geffen
When people ask me if I really like Nelly, I tell them: I’m not living in Toronto’s Portuguese neighborhood for nothing, right? The house-with-a-bit-of-electro mix is easy to find. Google it. Please.
  13. Junior Boys - In The Morning (Hot Chip Remix) - Domino
  14. DJ Le Roi feat. Roland Clark - I Get Deep (Original Mix) - Deeptown Music

Last but not least, here are a few old school classics I recently bought at Easy Street Records:
Storm - Love…Sexy (Blaze Vocal)
Truce - It’s Alright (Cassmaster Mix & Cassio’s Fever Mix)

15 February 2007 | Trag Nicht Soviel Dreck Rein

Here are my winter charts, but really, I am only listening to Tracey Thorn’s new album, Out Of The Woods (thanks bb). When I heard the opening song, I was quite shocked, thinking I was listening to Sinead O’Connor. That changed with the second song, A-Z, which is one of my favourites.
Although, she uses a lot of phrases (some of them (may be) worn out), it works for me.

You’ve been balanced on a knife
Will the city save your life
You’ve been waiting for so long
Just for somewhere to feel like home

Two more songs need to be singles: Grand Canyon and Raise The Roof. And there is a nice cover version of Arthur Russell’s Get Around To It.

Balanced
Panda’s been balanced on a knife

I have included links to listen to the songs (#), a lot of them on myspace. Do not judge.

  1. Dennis Ferrer - The World As I See It - Defected - (#)
This is my favourite deep house album at the moment. Church Lady is the lead single for me. There are a couple of remixes that got released recently but the original is still the best.
  2. Deichkind - Remmi Demmi (Egoexpress Remix D) - Universal - (#)
I totally missed this one when it was released in Spring of 2006. It just didn’t make it to Canada. 70ties German Bürgerlichkeit mit Katja E. und Sauna und so. The cover looks a bit like an old Bernhard Willhelm collection. Video.
  3. Arnold Jarvis - If I Stay (Jus’ Dope Remix) - Kif - (#)
  4. Vernessa Mitchell - Higher (Silk’s Original Mix) - Silk
Viola recommended this one after she found it on a disc that Pirahnahead gave her. Extremely uplifting.
  5. Mr. White - You Rock Me / The Sun Can’t Compare - Alleviated Records - (#)
This one appears on so many DJ lists it is unbelievable. Double A side.
  6. Justus Köhncke - Overhead - Kompakt - (#)
  7. Gary Bardouille - Starting Over (Aaron’s Stripped Down Church Edit) - Soul Heaven - (#)
He seems to have a very fresh myspace profile with more gospel house songs.
  8. SUMO - Lovebeat (Karizma’s K2 Darq Dub) ft. Clarisse Muvemba - Heya Hifi - (#)
  9. Anane - Walking On Thin Ice (Masters At Work Dub) - Vega - (#)
I like the dub version of Yoko Ono’s hit best. So raw.
  10. Herb LF - Jam 2 Da Mother / Miles (Soulphiction Remix) - Farside - (#)
  11. Kompis - In Somebody’s Spot (Ralph Myerz Space Shuttle Shuffle Mix) - Sunday Best - (#)
  12. Alexkid ft. Liset Alea - Nightshade (Rodriguez Junior Mix) - F Communications - (#)
  13. Ianeq - The Focaccia Pretext - Mental Groove - (#)
    Das geht so ab. funky.
  14. Jesse Rose - You’re All Over My Head / Evening Standard - Dubsided - (#)
Sabs said You’re All Over My Head has the sound of a lesbian disco in Paris.

07 November 2006 | My Autumn Charts

It seems I am more comfortable with posting my DJ charts every season/quarter instead of every month. What do you think?
Sometimes I have a small crisis, thinking that there are not enough NEW deep house or house records. But then, it is just me and it looks like I haven’t done my homework. No time to worry, listen to the top 3 on the chart and everything is alright.

Also, the next Hotnuts party is this Saturday, I’ll post the details later.
Please go to Movin’ Records myspace and listen to She’s Crazy. She’s Gaga.

  1. Mo.Ca feat. Michelle Weeks - Nobody (Scream Club Mix) - Coffee Killer
This has to be the most hysterical house song in a very long time. Michelle Weeks is the best, she belts it out like no other: I ain’t got nobody! The structure of the song is a bit similar to Be Thankful. Found the record through Tony Humphries charts. Listen to a sample.
  2. Roland Clark - Sunshine (Ron Trent Vocal Mix) - Need 2 Soul
Roland Clark - God Is Good (DJ Spen Main Mix) - Soul Heaven
Roland Clark double trouble. Sunshine has such an incredibly deep house sound. Listen to this gem at the Need 2 Soul myspace site. Further into the song Roland’s falsetto changes to his deeper voice. So good. Und diese tollen Flächen.
If you want to go to church, listen to God Is Good (DJ Spen Main Mix). Another hit.
  3. Byron Stingily - Hate Won’t Change Me (Shelter Vocal) - Un-Restricted Access
Again, wonderful vocals. I’m kind of out of words after #1 and 2.
  4. Kamar - I Need You (50% Dub) - Madhouse Records
This is a song from 1994 which I found at a second hand record store a few weeks ago. The original is produced by Kerri Chandler and this remix takes it over the top. Very hysterical intro.
  5. Arthur Russell - Springfield (DFA Remix) - Audika
I can sit on metal steps.
  6. Grampa - She’s Crazy (Yahya Insane Mix) - Movin’ Records
She’s gaga. She’s crazy. Vocals by Kerri Chandler’s dad on my favourite old school house label. I like to pitch it up when I play it. Faster. Maybe I want this as my theme song.
  7. Cassy - Night To Remember (from the My Auntie EP) - Perlon
Is this minimal already? Dunno. Lovin’ the somehow detached vocals.
    (via chantilly bass)
  8. Badly Drawn Boy - Nothing’s Gonna Change Your Mind (Hot Chip Mix) - EMI
For those melancholic autumn hours. Listen.
  9. Justus Köhncke feat. Eric D. Clark - An Ounce Of Memories (Vocal Version) - Firm
Listen at firm records’ or Justus Köhncke’s myspace page. Dreamy. Charmy.
  10. Kerri Chandler & Monique Bingham - In The Morning (Lost Love Dub) - Bigga Sounds
The Final Raw Mix on the A side is a bit softer and features vocals by Monique. Love the dub.
  11. Aaron-Carl - Sky (AC’s Resurrection Mix) - Wallshaker
Still waiting for the vinyl. Get the mp3 at Aaron’s Wallshaker label.
  12. Pelle Boi - Robert Schmidt am Telefon (from the I’m A Popperschwein EP) - Kritik
Robert Smith on The Phone. For that Cure flavour. Very Lullaby off of Disintegration. Anzuhören bei LaManie.
  13. Brooks - Pre - Mantis
  14. Kate Bush - King Of The Mountain (Radioslave Mix) - One-sided 12″
The wind is whistling through the house.
  15. Pink Skull - Unicorn Harpoon - Tonearm
Sounds like alien voices to me. I’ll always adore that.

01 July 2006 | Summer Charts

I have to take a short break from the What produzentin eats theme week as I go on a holiday for a couple of days. I probably will have some very relaxing pictures later this week.

But first, here are my summer charts and another Larry Levan remix for your mp3 collection. I downloaded a mix of Winners by Manfriday in June. After a few listens I really wanted to have the vinyl of the song, so I orderd a copy on ebay. It turns out, the version on the official release is totally different, sounding more like a cheap 80ties dance track. Soon I found out, that this Larry Levan demo mix is only available on a bootleg 12 inch and on a japanese compilation CD. I still have to track down either of them. Anyway, enjoy.

They don’t seem to love you more
When you’re winning
They don’t seem to love you
Nobody really wants you
When your loosing
They don’t really love you

Winners - loosers
What’s the good side of you

Oh, the World Cup has arrived at my crib. Superschum and H. are staying over for a few nights and they brought this adorable Nutella ball. I love it so much, guess my diet has to wait. Schum and H. made me watch my first World Cup game from start to finish, Germany vs. Argentina. I’m in love with Odo now (this was easy, right?). Make sure to read his A-Z.

sweet things

  1. Fox N’ Wolf - Claws Against Knives (Todd Terje Remix) - Kitsune
This is my summer hit. Squeaky vocals and bubbling beats. I wanted to post the song but I am afraid the lovely guys from Kitsune might sue my little ass. It’s on the Kitsune Maison 2 compilation. Here samples of the song here and here. Wow.
  2. Jamie Lidell - When I Come Back Around (Freeform Reform) - Warp
This is from his Multiply Additions remix album. After all the Jamie - Prince comparisons he finally gets a Prince beat in the mix: Raspberry Beret provides a perfect backdrop for the song.
  3. Man Friday - Winners (Larry Levan Demo Mix)
  4. Kirk Franklin - Looking For You - Gospocentric
I heard it first on the radio but didn’t know who it was. I wanted to have this song so badly as it re-sings the hook from Patrice Rushen’s disco classic Haven’t You Heard. Then I found it at fourfour.
  5. Jimpster feat. Diamondancer - A Love Like This - Freerange
This sounds like part 2 of Delano Smith feat. Diamondancer - A Message For The DJ (Jimpsters Red Light Remix). Diamondancer sings/reads her lyrics above the forward grooving Jimpster beats. Listen.
  6. Peaches - Downtown - XL Recordings
I haven’t figuered out which Prince beat she is sampling. Sounds a bit like Vanity 6 or Apollonia 6.
  7. Lisa Shaw - Let It Ride (Speakeasy Remix) - Naked Music
  8. Snax And Ianeq - Fill Me Up (M.A.N.D.Y. Edit) - Get Physical
  9. Christian Rottler - Feuer - Freundinnen
The song finally sees the light of day, I had the promo version for a while now and I still like the original singer-songwriter version best. The remixes are more in the electro vein. Listen to more Christian Rottler songs on his homepage.
  10. Only Freak feat. Rasiyah - Can’t Get Away (From Your Love) (Solid Groove Remix) - Freerange
