29 December 2008 | Holiday Hotnuts

Oh oh. The Holiday Low Ballin’ Special Hotnuts party looks like a very festive night. Jaime and das hussy were at the turntables and had the hottest beats. From what I heard, Mary was the best hostess, as always.

Oliver and I wish we were there. But instead, we were stuck in Chicago. Oprah had invited us for a late night pizza snack at her house.

Happy Holidays, dear readers.

I would like to share a quote from Myra Breckinridge by Gore Vidal, which I am currently reading. It uses one of my favourite holiday related words, which I had never heard before this December (thanks to El Bear Ho): Bauble.

“I preferred to be Greer Garson, a gracious lady whose compassionate breasts were more suited to be last pillow for a dying youth than the baubles for the coarse hands of some horny boy.”

20 December 2008 | Let A Lady Moan

When 100% Pure Love by Crystal Waters came out, my Bavarian friend Kiki and I were all over the dance floor of our favourite club, Construction Five (Yes, there were lots of Bauarbeiter, we loved das Milieu. And yes, they let underage girls in).

Had I asked myself where 100% Pure Love’s cowbell came from, I would have stumbled across the following treasure before: Jeanette “Lady” Day – Come Let Me Love You. First pressed as a 12″ on the legendary New York disco label Prelude, it got a so-called Mastermix treatment by Shep Pettibone in 1982. This was one of the mixes that were featured on Shep’s radio show and the biggest mixes were subsequently released on a Prelude compilation.

But now, without further ado, please enjoy the moans and cowbells of Jeanette “Lady” Day.
Download it at the great Beat Electric or listen below.

*attention: well known Madonna trivia following*
I bet Madonna must have heard Jeanette moaning in the 80ties. Why else would she have called Shep? First a couple of remixes for the lady (Color Mix of True Blue) until he finally produced Vogue for Ms. Ciccone.

19 December 2008 | Hot News From the Fragrance Department: Flame

It was mentioned on a late night talk show and I thought it was just the host’s invention. Then Mary sent me the link to Fire Meets Desire, which basically equals Flame, the fragrance by Burger King:

“The Whopper sandwich is America’s favourite Burger. Flame by BK captures the essence of that love and gives it to you. Behold the scent of seduction, with a hint of flame-broiled meat.”

It is available onläne, some stores in NY but not at Burger King. I don’t get it. But I want to smell like grilled meat.

Yummy!

p.s. Aren’t all good things named Flame?

16 December 2008 | Spoiler Alert

I’m all excited about the eyepatch movie, Valkyrie. The two quotes below sent me over the edge: Now I want to see it.
Soon, we’re going to have friends visiting: Bitz & Bobs. To make sure they don’t get bored I’m putting together a list of activities including a big night out at the movies with Tom Cruise.
It’s all about fun, fun, fun.

“Looks like the Razzies are confident in their prophesy that “Valkyrie” will land in their next derby, which commences on Jan. 21 when noms are unveiled. Last year the Razzie ceremony ended with big photos on stage of films they expect to see next year. Tom Cruise in that eyepatch got the biggest play “” and the most howls, guffaws and applause from the audience.”

Did you just get here? No, I was here earlier for the circle jerk # I want to have ninner (night dinner). But you can only have that when you had drunch and dunch before. # New dance: rusty machinery getting oiled for the first time in 4 months # New drag name, not sure if it has found a person yet: Pearly Nipple, sister of Misty Discharge # German word that needs to find its way into English: Beipackzettel

When we finally arrive at the Henhouse, our new favourite lezzie neighborhood bar, I discover that the one Mariah CD is missing from their jukebox. The bartender is wearing a Bob Dylan T-shirt (Doh). So I ask Ms Tambourine Man why she took Mimi away. She says something bla bla bla. I tell her: Nobody cares when the tears of a clown fall down.

On the way home, asking the guy in the corner store if we could watch 10,000 BC on his monitors. He says: No.

16 November 2008 | Two Sides to Every Story

Journey With The Lonely

Based on his release schedule, Mr. Louis Burns can be considered the Kate Bush of house music. Better known as Lil Louis, his last release was the single “Clap Your Hands” in ’97. A great, stomping house song. Of course, before that he released the now classic house albums “Journey With the Lonely” in ’92, featuring the single “Club Lonely“, and his 1989 debut “From the Mind of Lil Louis” including the moaning anthem “French Kiss”.

And now, it looks like a new double album is coming out later this year, titled “Two Sides To Every Story”. Lil Louis’ website is a bit wonky (now updated and pictures only), however a few release events seem to be scheduled. For instance, one in his hometown Chicago on Christmas Day.
Apart from that, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of promotion happening for the release yet. In an interview with Little Louis Vega and Lil’ Louis, LL mentions that only the LLs have his new single “Crazy”.

Aptly titled Two Sides to Every Story, the album is written entirely by Lil Louis from a woman’s perspective, depicting their joy, love and heartache of being with an enigmatic artist. The Double CD, Side A and Side AA is divided between R n B and Dance – it will move you and have you moving. (…) In an unparalleled move, Two Sides to Every Story will be released with a companion book, entitled A Man’s Diary: A Good Man”™s Search for a Good Woman. Louis skillfully uses two art forms to speak candidly about love, life, and relationships.

The text above is taken from his website and together with the album cover below, I can’t help but think about R. Kelly. I’m hopeful that this doesn’t mean anything bad for the new music.

With friends I had so many great party nights dancing to Lil Louis music. I still remember one gay tea dance at Plastik (long closed) in Frankfurt. We were still kind of high from the music when the DJ played the last song. As the music faded out my best friend screamed: “Spiel’ noch ein Lied, meine Pille kommt grade!” (Play another song, my pill is just kicking in) , which was greeted with laughter. Sure enough, the DJ played one more song and we totally freaked out: Club Lonely.

Two Sides

15 November 2008 | JPL 4 1.2.3.

Jean Paul Lespagnard sent me pictures of his spring 2009 collection for 1.2.3. Here is a another excerpt from my interview with him:

“Sometimes I’m finding fabric, sometimes I’m hearing stories., sometimes I meet someone and I get inspired, sometimes it is a movie. Like my next collection (for 1.2.3.) is about Sylvester Stallone. When I was in Hyeres, I had this idea about doing a collection about Jaqueline, like she is fed up with Texas and she is watching the movie Cliffhanger. So she decides to go to Austria to become a climber and she is completely obsessed by Sylvester Stallone at the end, so she is watching Rocky Balboa. So my next collection will be about climbers and boxers.”

11 November 2008 | Being A Muse According to Gossip Girl

Serena: He asked me to pose for him, in his studio. To be his muse.

Blair: And you said yes?

Serena: Why not? It is romantic.

Blair: No, it’s a death trap. Being a muse never works out.

Serena: Plenty of women have been both lover and muse to famous artists. Like Picasso.

Blair: Serena, a guy starts out in his blue period and everything’s great. But it’s only a matter of time until he’s all into cubism and it’s some other girl’s eye coming out of her forehead.

10 November 2008 | Fangs Are The (New?) Fags

The Haters (You Know Who)

True Blood details the co-existence of vampires and humans in a small town in Lousiana. The HBO series centers on Sookie Stackhouse (played by Canadian content Anna Paquin, who won an Oscar for her supporting role in The Piano about 30 years ago), a telepathic waitress at a diner, who falls in love with the much older, but still young & pale looking vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer). The show is written by Alan Ball, who also did Six Feet Under. Gay.

It is very easy to see the vampires (who are referred to as fangs) as a metaphor for the fags (who are also referred to as gays).

I think I have a ‘like / hate’ relationship with the show, tipping over to ‘like’ with the most recent episodes:
- There is tons of fang banging
- There is the gay character of Lafayette, a cook, drug dealer, Internet porn wannabe
- There is vampire blood dealing, cause ‘v’ (as it is also called) is like a drug, enhancing the nine human senses

Now, finally, I’m coming to the point of the whole post. On Sunday, I heard about the second season of True Blood. We had brunch with Canadian-cutie Jeremy Podeswa, who told us that he is going to direct a couple of episodes for the next round of fang fun. I can’t reveal more, he made me sign a non-disclosure fagreement. My teeth are already growing with fangcitement.

22 October 2008 | Lucky

Jaime played Lucky by Donna Summer on Saturday and I had totally forgotten about the Giorgio Moroder produced song from the Bad Girls album. I fell in love all over again, of course the rhythm track but also the way Donna sings here. In some parts it almost sounds like fantasy English to me, although the story is pretty straight forward:

I knew he wouldn’t beg
So I gave in without fighting
Been so long since I’ve been this way
Since I loved this way
So I asked him if he would stay for a while

Lucky comes easy
Lucky’s not shy
And if you’re lucky
You’ll go for a ride

I think it would be great on stage in fantasy English.

It seems I have a weakness for songs called Lucky:
If there is nothing missing in my life, then why do these tears come at night.

Lucky be sad.

19 October 2008 | Forever 29

I’m a bit behind on 30 Rock, catching up on season one. When Mariah said that she loves the comedy TV show, I should have watched all episodes right away.

30 Rock deals with the behind the camera action of the fictional live sketch comedy series, The Girlie Show with Tracy Jordan.

Here is a short clip about the age of Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski). It starts of with Jenna being cross examined by network executive Jack Donaghy (Alex Baldwin).

06 October 2008 | Interview with Jean-Paul Lespagnard for Mode Depesche

Mode Depesche

The new issue of Mode Depesche has just been released. The cover of the fashion magazine features model and actress Marisa Berenson (granddaughter of famous fashion designer Elisa Schiaparelli). You may remember Marisa from her roles in Barry Lydon or Visconti’s Death in Venice. Of course there are many photos of her. I only want to point you to the cover of Vogue (July 1970), together with Helmut Berger.
Also, there is an interview with Peter Berlin done by Claus.

Anyway, at the beginning of July I did a short trip to Brussels to meet up with designer Jean-Paul Lespagnard to talk about his latest collections, French fries, obsessions and Madonna”™s death.

The milliner Stephen Jones has launched his first fragrance at Dover Street Market in London. The collaboration with Comme des Garcons will soon be available at CdG boutiques worldwide. The perfume is described as a “meteorite crashing into a violet” or “futuristic but rococo”. It includes notes of violet, violet leaf, ‘synthesized cyber aldehyde’, clove, carnation, rose, jasmine, heliotrope, gaiac wood, magma, black cumin, vetiver and amber.

When I attended a couple of Prince concerts last year, I was hoping for a live album. Especially of the aftershows that took place at a smaller venue at the O2 Arena in London. And in October, a little bit over a year later, this is what’s happening.

Prince and photographer Randee St. Nicolas are releasing 21 Nights, a book of photographs spanning his London residency, including poetry, lyrics and “Indigo Night,” a CD–available only with the book–capturing Prince’s live after-show sessions.

17 September 2008 | Do You Believe In Life After Love?

Surprise: I’m a little bit in love with Kanye, again.

It's a Love Lockdown

Of course, it all started when he sang his new single, Love Lockdown at the MTV Awards. Then he posted the song on his blog, then yesterday, a new version. Update: Now on iTunes.

After listening to the song on repeat, I found the above picture of ‘Ye at New York fashion week on Laura’s blog. How could I have not fallen for a sad puppy?

I can feel something inside me say
I really don’t think you’re strong enough

One question remains: Is Kanye the new Cher?
At least, he has to be the new Queen of Auto-Tune. There is lots of hope that his new album, tentatively titled 808′s & Heartbreak (out December 16), has lots of filters on his singing voice. Rumor has it the raps are gone.

13 September 2008 | Arbeit Nervt

One of my favourite German bands, Deichkind is returning with a new album in October. The record and first single are called Arbeit Nervt (Work Sucks). DikeKid are hailing from Hamburg and started out as a Hip-Hop combo before venturing to their current, more electro based sound.

With their new single Deichkind are again on the border of hick-ness (Prolltum) and party alarm.

The video for Arbeit Nervt is by Alex and Liane, who worked with Bloc Party, The Ting Tings and also did the excellent Deichkind video for Ich betäube mich (I’m narcotizing myself)

01 September 2008 | They Call Her G-G

And I’m not talking about Gossip Girl here. It’s the Governor General I’m interested in. It all comes down to this: Queen Elisabeth II. has a lot to do with reigning over 16 countries, so she needs a Governor General in Canada.

I’m obsessed with the role of the G-G for several reasons:

  • Most importantly: There is only one person above the G-G, the Queen
  • The G-G is addressed as His/Her Excellency
  • The G-G has his/her own flag and it is stunning. I would like to get a dress made out of a fabric with that cute little lion printed all over.

Maybe one day I can become a G-G, too. I’m an immigrant lady, so I have one of the prerequisites. However, the G-G gets appointed on advice of the Canadian Prime Minister. Mmmmh. There should be a way!

Written & (first time) directed by Charlie Kaufman. The general release date for the film is October 24 but there seems to be no trailer yet.

I’m back in Toronto after a long summer in sausageland. After I got here, I had such a sausage craving that I had to buy my favourite Bratwürstchen immediately. I kind of want to visit Johnsonville, Wisconsin and do a tour of the sausage factory where I can stuff brats in all my orifices.

Brats mit mir.

10 August 2008 | Kiss-Off Party

Trannyshack, the long-running weekly drag-show in San Francisco, founded by Heklina is closing the doors. They have a Kiss Off Party on August 23rd featuring their greatest performers and special guests including Lady Bunny and Lady Miss Kier.

The first time I went must have been in ’96 or ’98. And then almost every Tuesday for a couple of months in 2004.

I couldn’t find my most memorable performances online, featuring a drag zombie dancing to Beyonce or blood pouring down a bucket onto the drag queen in a stars and strips bathing suit lip-syncing Irene Cara’s Flashdance, What A Feeling… Anyway, check out Heklina’s and Glamamore’s version of All Is Full of Love:

What are your thoughts on Trannyshack closing its doors as a weekly event?
Lady Bunny: “With all of those hags out of work I am terribly concerned for the safety and sanitation of San Francisco”™s streets!”

04 August 2008 | Mary & Maddy: A Match Made in Hair-ven?

Mary in Lanvin

Ok. This be crazy. It looks like Mary Messhausen shaved her head just to be in Madonna’s latest video Give It 2 Me.

My dear friend Mary left Germany a week ago and now I make this disturbing discovery. She hadn’t told me about it, because she knows I love long hair. Always have. Now, you tell me, who rocked the Lanvin sunglasses better: Mary Messhausen with short or long hair?

03 August 2008 | Bekennerschreiben

In der Zwischenzeit wurde “Madonna Und Wir. Bekenntnisse.” veröffentlicht. Aus diesem Anlass möchte ich ein sehr privates Bekenntnis aus meinem Text zu dem Buch preisgeben. Don’t judge.

Happy New Year!”

Das Buch kann z.b. hier bestellt werden.

01 August 2008 | Der, Die, Das Heels

Dear Readers,

After Frankfurt Gay Pride, the tour with Ms. Messhausen led us through 3 countries and 5 cities in 8 days. It was the blast, during which we rediscovered our love for the German article “die” (pronounced dee). As some of you may remember this site started as dieproduzentin.de

After Mary went back to Toronto last Sunday, I needed a rest from the binge purge & shopping excesses. Cocooning seemed like the only solution.

Tuesday night, I watched “Die Stein“, a new TV series about die lustig lüsterne Lehrerleben. A welcome surprise of the show is the former Fassbinder actress Irm Herrman in a supporting role as the school’s secretary.

Anyway, here is a picture of die pumps I bought in Antwerp. Now, I’m asking myself, might die MMM heels be to demure?

24 July 2008 | Broken Embraces

Pedro Almodóvar is blogging about his new movie Los Abrazos Rotos (Broken Embraces) which is partly shot in Lanzarote and staring Penelope Cruz. His posts are available in Spanish, French and English. For instance, there are notes on a couple of screen tests (first picture below).
The film is going to be released in spring 2009.

Here is an excerpt about his photophobia:

If you ever find a photo where yours truly appears, in an interior, hidden behind dark glasses and a hat, don”™t think that I”™ve turned into a jerk in search of glamour, I”™m just a director who suffers from photophobia, scorched by hundreds of kilowatts of light.
But, in the cinema, the light is what matters. Without the light with which Von Sternberg lit Marlene”™s face, Marlene would never have been Dietrich, she would have just been a sarcastic girl who was verging on chubby. The magic is in the light, so I won”™t complain.
Bye for now.

Almodovar & friends
“I apologized to my companions in the photo for my conventional outfit (an always attractive Armani tuxedo). To my relief Alaska supported my choice. After fifty, she told me, you become either a gentleman or Sigfried and Roy.”
© Pedro Almodóvar

(…) I intend to say as little as possible about the story and the characters, I”™ll wander around on the fringes, in purely tangential elements. You”™ll think I”™ve got a real cheek, and I”™m sure you”™re right. (Anything to celebrate the lack of intermediaries). I”™ve been nurturing a dream for some time. I”™d like that at least once spectators would go to see one of my films without knowing what it”™s about.
I know that it”™s an almost impossible dream, but I”™m going to try to get as near to it as possible. Still, I am going to show lots of images of the different processes, images that will be transferred directly from my camera to this page. (source)

15 July 2008 | Doc Nancy Will Help You

Finally, here is Doc Nancy from the Maths Ship. She’s got a new quiz and is glad to counsel you with your problems. Doc Nancy is in. More pictures after the jump.

Das Matheschiff

Nancy, teaching

Which one is the fastest ball?

As I am a spokeswoman of the Year of Mathematics I am very busy these days to bring the infinite joy of numbers and calculations to the people. The highlight of this noble duty was my visit to the Maths Ship. Going there just felt like finally coming home. The visitors where mesmerized by the exhibition of those wonderful mathematical phenomena depicted in beautiful colors and shapes. They appreciated my further explanations and the crazy patterns of the wallpapers worked great with my outfit.
This experience told me that I am ready for another mathematical life counseling session. As always you can leave any of your personal problems in the comments section. I will give you the answer to your question from the mathematical point of view. No matter if you have problems in your love life, with your styling or whatever: There is always a formula that can help!

The Questionnaire

I LOVE MATHS

One of my dearest readers told me that he urgently needs another mathematical challenge from me. Thus, in addition to the counseling session I’ll introduce to you a famous mathematical problem called The Costume Jewelry Problem:
Imagine you’re on a game show and you have to choose one out of three doors. You know that behind two doors is only costume jewelry and behind the third door is real jewelry plus everything else you ever dreamed of. But you (unlike the host) don’t know what is behind which door. After you made your choice the host opens another door with costume jewelry behind it. Then he offers you to take the other still closed door instead of your first choice.
Now the question is: Is it an advantage to swap your choice or to stay by your first choice in order to increase the chances to win everything you ever dreamed of? Or doesn’t it make any difference at all?
There is no prize to win as the solution might be quite easy to google. But those among you who loved the quizzes might have great fun with this problem and get some insight to the strange world of probability theory.

To sum this up, you can send me all your problems as this is a mathematical life counseling session or you can leave solutions for the Costume Jewelry Problem or any other comment you would like to make. I will gladly respond in any case.

Love,Ӭ
Nancy

I guess I can say we had a wonderful night at Parage. Everyone was worried it was going to be empty because of the new Rauchverbot in Cologne. But au contraire, there was dancing at Sixpack.

I wish there were cute pictures of Malo, Bernd, Viola, Michi, Oliver, Herr Krebber, Michael & Peter but all I can give you is me on crutches. What can I tell you? I only wanted to have some fun & now someone said I might have a dancing-sporn. This is just screwed up (verkorkst).

I’m basically overdosed on Gaudi.

Please send all your broken colorful tiles to my attention and I’ll prepare a turtle world out of them that will rival the Sagrada Familia but gayer. It shall be called “Gay Guell Tortuga (Gay)”. It shall take 77 years to be completed but it will not be finished ever. Think of it as an objet.

The turtle world will provide happiness to all people and will open everyday at 9 am. But the best pictures can be taken before 8 am, before the tourist busses arrive.

The merchandise shop will be open 24 h. The customers will be served free water.

30 June 2008 | Candy Darling

Below are a few quotes from the book Candy Darling by Candy Darling, published 1992 through Hanuman. During the course of a day Candy committed her thoughts to a soft-covered notebook writing about things such as recipes, drafts of letters, makeup tips, addresses, etc. Then, there are pages of speculation; words meant to be used as a rebuke or compliment, dialogue to be stored away for future use – perhaps for a play she was writing, jokes:

All I could concentrate on for the rest of the morning was the grunting and groaning and the sounds ofthe bed creaking. Gil left around 9 a.m. I was still too stunned to sleep, being persecuted to capacity. As Mr. Right was going out of the door he saw that I was not asleep and said goodbye. His face seemed to be saying to me it’s really you I love mentally it was all you. But then I am not mentally well.

I know it hasn’t all been beer & pretzels for you either.

I see the day coming when the words femme and butch will be more commonly used. I mean to be used for heterosexuals not just for gay or bisexuals. Think of the intersting types.
Female-Heterosexual-type- Basic butch with femme overtones. the drag type
Raq. W. / J. Craw. / Jane Russell
Basic femme – Butch overtones Greta Garbo
Basic femme – femme overtones M.M. L.T.

When a woman wears the same dress twice
Then she doesn’t feel chic.
And when she doesn’t feel chic
She feels insecure
Then she can’t sleep at
night then she suffers from
nervous exhaustion then
that could lead to a
nervous breakdown.

The only law she never broke is the law of gravity.

The only security is health and the ability to adjust in life.

Dear Kathy
First of all please forgive me for not answering sooner. I’ve been so involved with my own identity, which has been so vague, and social commitments, basic living procedures and affairs of the heart that for a while I ceased to exist. Except for other people. (…)

23 June 2008 | (no title)

So, I went to the openings of Lucie Stahl (thank you & I owe you) at Dependance in Brussels on Thursday and Herr Krebber at Kunstverein Cologne on Friday.

Thursday and Friday, we went to the fish booth. It felt like I had never eaten fresher fish before. “The sale starts July 1st”, said the Margiela shop woman with the (bad) Amy make-up. Sabs and I had an orange juice across the street from the white building. As I’m on sale diet I didn’t buy anything in Brussels, except for a present.

Friday night, Michaela, Viola and I, disguised as Hase und Igel, went to the second bar first. We quickly ordered Schnitzel. There is nothing better than a Schnitzel at 4am. Michaela (bff) said I should take everything else and not just the Merlin wig. I only wanted long hair. “Aber sie hat doch so gern lange Haare.”

06 June 2008 | Bembel Ballet

Back in Frankfurt, I’ve finally overcome my jet lag. Last night we went to the ballet to see “Impressing the Czar” choreographed by William Forsythe in 1988 and now re-introduced under his guidance. It was performed by the Royal Ballet of Flanders, marking the first time this piece was done by another ensemble.
The last part of Czar has the whole troupe dancing in school girl uniforms to repetitive beats and cymbals. Thoughts of Britney Spears came to my mind, with all the male dancers basically being in Britney hit-me-baby-one-more-time drag.

In case you have to get tickets, go to the box office 10 minutes prior to the show and buy your last minute seats. It’s on for 3 more days only.

15 May 2008 | Green Porno

Green Porno is a series of 8 short films written, directed and featuring Isabella Rossellini made for small, mobile screens. The movies explain the mating rituals of the dragonfly, spider, bee, praying mantis, earthworm, snail and fly.

The Sundance Channel currently only permits US users to view the shorts. But you should be able to check all of them here.

Read the Sundance press release (in pdf) including an interview with Isabella Rossellini: “Then they said … It would be great to do something flashy ““ that was the word they used – that calls attention to these new possibilities. To me, ‘flashy’ translated into sex.”

From The Hollywood Reporter:

Johnny Knoxville and Parker Posey are attached to star in John Waters’ Christmas film “Fruitcake.”

The plot is officially under wraps but is said to center on the title character, a boy named after his favorite dessert. He runs away from home during the holidays after he and his parents are caught shoplifting meat, then meets up with a runaway girl raised by two gay men and searching for her birth mother.

This Is That Prods. and Killer Films are producing “Fruitcake,” which once was set up at New Line. ThinkFilm is said to be in talks to come aboard.
