OMG, it’s the gay bloggies and my friend Frank of omgblog.com is in the final three. This seems to be the last round of voting, so please give Frank the thumps up.
And kick the others to the curb:
Thumps down right her
One more thump down right her
p.s. If you are wondering what Frank looks like and you are disappointed that he was a no show in his karaoke version of the Angel of the Morning, don’t have a sad face any longer, there’s one picture of him on produzentin.com where he is wearing a cute & slutty Canada shirt.
p.p.s. Now, I can finally come forward with my omgblog obsession. If Frank comes in second or first, I’ll celebrate with him by doing at least one “OMG, he’s naked: (insert celebrity name her)” post. Vote for Frank, vote for nudity!

I know I’m late to the party, but anyway.
I missed Syndromes and a Century when it showed at the Tiff in 2006. So much has been written about the film, it is on so many top ten lists… It took over a year until the movie by Apichatpong Weerasethakul was screened in Toronto again. I finally saw it last weekend.
Sometimes I think all movies should have two halves. The first half of Syndromes is set in a rural hospital in Thailand, maybe in the 70ties, the second part at a modern day, urban clinic. Both halves begin with a job interview of a new doctor and almost the same dialog.
You might think you slipped through a wormhole while watching the film or was the narrative just mirrored? Is the total eclipse of the sun the first parts version of a black intake vent sucking up smoke in the later part?
The next time, I want the see Syndromes backwards. Back and forth through the wormhole. This should provide the full experience.
And there is the subtle and sometimes absurd humor of a drunken tv doctor, the gay monk who wants to be a dj, the orchid expert. The camera does not move a lot and I guess that adds to the calmness the movie conveys.
If you have a chance to see Syndromes and a Century, don’t hesitate.

As you may already know, the new Mary J. Blige album leaked on the interwebs. It is a very well produced record, with classic Mary themes. With Fade Away there is even a slow, self-reflective disco number that has her singing: “Sometimes invisibility would be great”.
Basically, what I wanted to say is that Growing Pains is another favourite Mary album of mine.

What would the animal series be without Mary’s favourites? So without further ado, the first blog entry by Mary Messhausen:
Growing up as a little girl in an alternative universe (Newfoundland), I used to gaze out of my frosty window to the cliff across the pond. One day I noticed little creatures fluttering about. I thought they were fairies, so I decided to have a closer look. When I reached the top of the cliff, I was surrounded by hundreds of little flying mini penguins… also known as the puffin.
The puffin stands at about 30 cm (1 foot) tall and I have a weak spot for them because they have bright clown coloured faces, their tiny flappy wings bring them all over the world and year after year they return home and breed in the same hole.

Fast forward to when I was 16. I went back to the motherland aka The Philippines. One night I was asleep in my family home when I awoke to the sound of a bird like twill. Curious to see where the sound was coming from, I strolled through the Chocolate Hills and ventured into the forest. With my trusty flashlight, I quickly found the source of this mysterious sound. High in the treetops I spotted the Mawmag, known locally as the Koboldmaki or Philippine Tarsier.
As it looked down upon me with its enormous eyes, I figured that it could fit in the palm of my hand. It was really the cutest animal I had seen since my brush with the puffin. I always wanted the people here to see this sleepy and shy monkey, so I’m going back in February to bring a bunch home to live with me in my cozy new shack.
That being said, I’m delighted to introduce you to the two animal spirits of Mary.

The other day, I got mail from Bobs & Bitz. It was a spread from a weekly German newspaper about extinct animals. The lovely Beaverhausen ladies had sent it to my attention because of the animal series at produzentin.com.
As my favourite extinct animal the Tasmanian Tiger (aka Beutelwolf) was featured in the article, I thought I should feature it too. But then, I saw the quagga:

One of only 5 existing pictures of a living quagga (source)
I already hear you saying: produzentin, are you kiddin’ us? This is just an okapi with the stripes on backwards! Or it’s a zorse! Don’t be foolin’ us, please!
Hold on, hold on, dear readers: The quagga is fo’ real. It has a close relation to the zebra, whereas the closest relative to the okapi is the giraffe. We have to get that family tree straightened out, right?
Anyways, the quagga lived in South Africa and is extinct since 1883. But this is not the end of the story. The Quagga Project aims to reproduce the quagga through back breeding of specific zebra stock. I can’t wait for the quagga to come back.
More on the quagga.

I feel very honored to have a post by my friend malo, who runs the (I would like to say: amazing) blog malorama.de:
As everybody knows, Produzentin is the leading Roisin Murphy promoter in Canada. Last Saturday night, The House of Produzentin Headquarters sent me to Roisin’s concert in Cologne, to write a little report about it.
There is no doubt that the adjective to use for any description in combination with Roisin (body shape, voice, clothes, songs, dancing style) must be “amazing”, pronounced in a very stretched and queer way. Her show was amazing! The concert started with “Cry Baby”. Roisin wore slim black trousers, of course high waist and not this old fashioned slim waist Fergie shit, and a white tight shirt that showed all of her upper body muscles including the pectoral ones (quite small if anyone should be interested).
During the concert she changed her look, adding little fashion ingredients she picked from a trashy coat tree on stage. For example, a pink top with big shoulder pads, a black biker jacket with long fringes, a black hat, mirrored sunglasses or a pink feather boa, just to name a few. Well, all the gay standards, just look in your own wardrobe.
The next songs were all from her new album. She sings so perfect and with an incredible easiness – I mean with an amazing easiness – that first I suspected her to lip sync to a playback tape because the songs sounded identical to the album. But she sang really live, that was so amazing! Roisin is also the best female dancer I’ve seen for a long time. Not in this ridiculous Beyonce style, more in a very British way, sometimes a bit masculine and sharp, really fantastic. It was so much fun to see her dancing.
She also sang some songs from her last album and I especially liked a very nice version of “Forever More” from her Moloko times. Surprisingly, I wasn’t very convinced of “Overpowered”, the last song before the encores, but maybe I just heard this song too much during the last weeks. The concert lasted nearly two hours, the audience went crazy almost all the time and I’m not getting tired to be amazingly impressed by this night.
Here’s the setlist she sang in Frankfurt on Friday, as far as I remember it’s the same as in Cologne: Cry Baby ““ You Know Me Better ““ Checkin”™ On Me ““ Dear Miami ““ Primitive ““ Sow Into You ““ Footprints ““ Pandora ““ Movie Star ““ Scarlet Ribbons ““ Forever More ““ Let Me Know ““ Overpowered ““ Tell Everybody ““ Ramalama (Bang Bang).
Here are a couple of pictures from her show in Frankfurt.

Today produzentin.com is bringing you another guest blogger in the favourite animal series, please welcome Alex W. (meet Oppebu after the jump):
When Ms Produzentin asked me for my favorite animal, I wasn”™t sure what to say. My favorite species I knew, without question, was the giraffe ““ what”™s not to love, their long necks, spotted fur, and understated attitude. My favorite creature however is my cat, Oppebu, not at all a giraffe, but also with spotted fur. Which would I choose, especially as Oppebu has problems with peoples and species from North Africa or the Middle East, the home of my beloved giraffes?
I thought I”™d do a test and put some of my giraffe memorabilia together with Oppebu, and see who came out on top?
First, here is a small sample of the giraffe paraphernalia that I decided to use as the test:

Item: Giraffe three-touch lamp (broken).
Item: Giraffe toys (four plastic, one wooden, of various shapes and sizes).
Item: Giraffe pillow.
Item: Giraffe hand-puppet.
Item: Giraffe over-sized t-shirt.
Although I had left out some of my favorite giraffe broaches, reading materials, and other such stuff, I still thought it would do fine.

Mary and I are at a department store, just strolling around. Looking at a few tops I suddenly discover a Bernhard Willhelm label on one of the sweaters. Mary and I get super excited, why do they sell Bernhard here? The sweater is really beautiful, lots of patterns and nice colours. It looks like it would fit me. I discover the price tag on the lower back: $695. That seems to be OK.
Out of curiosity, I turn the sweater inside out. By doing so it becomes obvious that the sweater is made out of two towels, just sown together at the top and the sides. Some tailoring on the sides provides fitting. Mary and I are exited by the simplicity. I try to put the sweater on, but I can’t get in. It’s too small. Someone in the back of the store yells at us: “This sweater is overpriced and ugly”. (woke up)

We’re continuing with animal week at produzentin.com, here are Oliver’s most cherished creatures:
My favourite animals are cheddar bunnies. And my favourite bunny is Bernie, the Rabbit of Approval. Do I love cheddar bunnies because of Bernie, the Rabbit of Approval, or do I love Bernie because of the Cheddar Bunnies he approves? Yes and Yes! Plus I secretly identify with Bernie.

p.s.: My other favourite animal is the Giant Peccary, a new forest pig discovered in Brazil in 2004.

“there is a world
where witches rule the northern sky
where ice bears are the bravest of warriors
and where every human is joined with an animal spirit
who is as close to them as their own human heart
this world is dominated by the majesterium
which seeks to control all humanity
and whose greatest threat is a golden compass
and the one child destined to posses it”
Obviously, this is taken from the trailer to the movie The Golden Compass. I just watched 2 min of the Daemon featurette (youtube), focusing on the animal spirits that live with every person. Nicole Kidman has a golden monkey.
Now I want my dwarf manatee to float right beside me.
Anyway, Kate Bush has recorded a new song for the soundtrack of The Golden Compass, called Lyra, named after the child that wants to posses The Golden Compass. (source)

After I got my PhD I was ready to enjoy the experience of a daytime job. I felt my duty upon society and started working at a film production company. At the beginning it was all fun. It gave me the chance to wear all those lovely office outfits I always dreamed of, the internet connection worked great and I didn’t have to pay for my phone calls. But after a while I found out that they wanted me to do some serious work.
Don’t get me wrong, Doc Nancy is a hard working woman and knows how to deal with the struggles of life but this office hell was just too much. Deadlines, deadlines, deadlines. Thus, I quit the job and live on unemployment benefit now. This is great because I have enough time again for another mathematical life counseling session.
Just let me know if you have any problems. No matter if they are work, family, love life or sexual issues. I can give you a mathematical answer for all of those. Just post your questions in the comments. No matter how deep your problems are, Doc Nancy can help.

While I was on vacation in Florida I took a stop at Homosassa Springs, a wildlife park where you can observe manatees (some just call them sea cows). Sadly, this was before the digital camera age and the photos are now tucked away in a storage room in Germany. Anyway, I adore manatees. And these are just a couple of reasons why:
“Manatees are gentle and slow-moving. Most of their time is spent eating, resting, and in travel. They eat aquatic plants and can consume 10-15% of their body weight daily in vegetation.” (source)
Check the manatee cam
Just recently, I found out about the dwarf manatee, which was discovered in the Brazilian Amazonas in 2002 through a skull. 2 years later, the first living dwarf manatee could be photographed. With only 130 cm in length they are the smallest sirenas. The species was named Trichechus Bernardi after the late HRH Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, founding father of the World Wide Fund.
Get your dwarf manatee fix over here.

I’m not sure if I ever told you about one of my favourite animals, the okapi. My dear friend Sabs sent me the newspaper clipping above. That reminded me on how bad I want to see an okapi baby.
Need to know facts about okapis (source, source):
- The tongue of an okapi is long enough for the animal to wash its eyelids and clean its ears: it is one of the few mammals that can lick its own ears.
- Until the beginning of the 20th century, okapis were known to the native people only
- The okapi was known to the ancient Egyptians; shortly after its discovery by Europeans, an ancient carved image of the animal was discovered in Egypt. For years, Europeans in Africa had heard of an animal that they came to call ‘the African unicorn’.
- The okapi is the symbol of cryptozoology – the search for animals that are rumoured to exist, but for which conclusive proof is missing.
Don’t you wish you had a tongue as long as an okapi tongue? You could lick some nuts off of the table with minimal motion. Evenings on the couch would never be the same.
Have a look at a long okapi tongue in action.

I took this photo of an okapi at the Frankfurt Zoo.
Supposedly, there was a baby but it was too shy to come out. I was smad.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s television miniseries Berlin Alexanderplatz is based on the Alfred Döblin classic 1929 novel of the underclass in Berlin during the Weimar Republic. Fassbinder details a mammoth portrait of a common man struggling to survive in a viciously uncommon time. It was first broadcast in Germany in 1980.
RWF had a longstanding obsession with the novel. For instance, in his 1975 movie Fox and his Friends (Faustrecht der Freiheit), the main character played by Fassbinder himself, is named after the Berlin Alexanderplatz protagonist, Franz Biberkopf (Frank Beaverhead).
Remastered in 2006, the series is finally available as a DVD box set from The Criterion Collection with English subtitles or through SZ Cinemathek in Germany.
PS1 in New York is screening the more than 15-hour epic in 14 screening rooms – one for each episode of the film through January 2008.
Further reading:

Fassbinder on Berlin Alexanderplatz:

Saturday night started with a major fashion disaster. All the cab companies told us it would take half an hour to pick us up, so Mary, Prancey Boy, Golden Bag and me decided to walk to The Beaver. Mary had her Sunshower costume on, with a gold helium balloon attached to her cloud to represent the sun. It didn’t last long – an angry gust of wind took it away. Lesson learned: Don’t mess with the weather!
The rest of the night was fabulous thanks to all the wonderful dressed up craziness. Thank you all for partying.

Dear Readers, In recent weeks I felt a bit dull, especially when it came to blogging. I wasn’t feeling it, nothing excited me. Now, there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel. I’m talking about an inspiring interview, which I’ve read today.
Mary J. Blige talks to MTV about her new album, Growing Pains (due Dec 18), and the first single, Just Fine (couldn’t resist highlighting):
“So many people are like, ‘I’m perfect.’ I’m so imperfect, that’s why I’m able to let everything out and let people see everything. ‘Cause I’m just a mess like every other person that’s a mess out there. (…) So as long as I’m a human being and I’m not perfect, I’m able to say I’m having some growing pains. Because in order to sustain where you are once you made such a breakthrough that everyone is looking at you, now everyone is like, ‘Ooh, is she gonna make a mistake?’ Yes, I’m going to make a mistake. Yes, I’m still gonna do things. And that’s what Growing Pains is about, it’s about finally not whining about the pain, Mary J. Blige, and accepting the pain that comes with growing.”

“‘Just Fine’ was written based on me having a good day,” Blige explained. “You know, I can have 30 or 40 [bad days]. I can have as many bad days as anyone. But I choose to say, ‘I’m just fine.’ Right now. You know those days when your hair looks good, you’re not sitting in traffic, your man’s not acting like an idiot. You’re just fine. So it’s OK to have those days. So instead of coming with something ungrateful to the universe, how about I come with something first that’s says, ‘You know what? It’s OK. Enjoy this day if you’re having a great day.’ ”

“Feel Like a Woman” (…) she said, is based on the idea that it’s OK for women to receive gifts from men and that they shouldn’t be called gold diggers for it. “Sometimes you got to enjoy him splurging on you,” she said.
Just Fine Fine Fine Fine Fine, was produced by the The Dream and Tricky Stewart, the team responsible for Umbrella Ella Ella. Makes Sense? It doesn’t stop here, the videos to both songs are directed by Chris Applebaum. The video to Just Fine had its premiere today.

The Overpowered album by Roisin Murphy was finally released this week. A special limited edition double coloured LP is going to follow in November. It’s the pop-dance-electro-disco (whatever you want to call it) album for fall. My favourite song seems to change every other day, right now it is Body Language, which you can not listen to here but here.
- Aaron-Carl and DJ E. Dubb – The Door (Original Mix) – Wallshaker
There is nothing better than an angry Aaron-Carl song.
“I don’t want you no more. Pack your shit. Here’s the door.”
- Jill Scott – Hate On Me (Shelter Vocal) – Restricted Access
Remixed by Quentin Harris. I’m always in on hater lyrics.
- Chuck Love – Beatdown (Jimpster Mix) – OM
If you can’t get enough of the forward pushing Jimpster sound, I suggest his remix of 400 Years by Bob Marley and the Wailers. Trippin’.
- Kanye West feat. Dwele – Flashing Lights – Roc-A-Fella
I still love the synth stabs on this one so much. It is the next single off Graduation. Is this the first time paparazzi is rhymed with Nazi?
“Till I get flashed by the paparazzi
Damn, these nigga’s got me,
I hate these nigga’s more than the Nazis”
- Moodymann – I’d Rather Be Lonely – KDJ
- Grand High Priest – Long Time Coming (GHP Vocal) – Re-House
Remix of A Change Is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke.
- Veronique – Use Me (Sunday Morning Dub, Afterhours Mix) – Wallshaker
Another stompin’ AC production. The dub is quite peak hour, for later or earlier, there is the Afterhours Mix.
- Marlon D – Jesus Creates Sound (Main Mix) – Strictly Rhythm
Don’t you love the cheesy “This is a journey into sound” sample, the hi-hats and cymbal clashes?
- Yass – He Reigns (Main) – Purple Music
Gospel in da house.
- Marvin Gaye – Music (Karizma Remix) – Rotgut Records

Went to a Karaoke bar on Saturday night with Margot, Kevin, Mary and Uwe. We rented a private room. The room had black light, wallpaper with blue skies and fluffy white clouds. Mary and I did secret shots every time we got drinks for all. The bartender asked us if we wanted harsh or light shots. Mary said: “Harsh with fruity undertones”, on which he only rolled his eyes. We went with harsh.
At one point we all sang Bag Lady by Erykah Badu. So much fun.
Watched a lot of Erykah videos yesterday. Still, one of my favourites is Next Lifetime featuring Andre 3000, Pete Rock and Method Man.
Erykah’s 4th studio album, The Kabah, is scheduled for spring 2008.

I’m big into politics when it involves new holidays. After the re-election of the Ontario government on Wednesday a new holiday was proclaimed, Family Day. Happening at the 3rd Monday in February.
The first Family Day was introduced in Alberta in the 1990′s:
“The holiday was proclaimed by Alberta Premier Don Getty, in response to a drug scandal involving his son, Dale Getty, who had been arrested for possession of cocaine and was revealed to have cocaine addiction. Premier Getty was obviously embarrassed by the revelation and admitted publicly that he had neglected his family, saying that it was also important for all Albertans to take more care with their families.” (sources 1, 2)

Yesterday evening saw the premiere of Project Runway Canada, the casting show looking for an innovative new designer. The US-American version of the series is of course hosted by Heidi Klum (which I heard someone refer to as die hohle Kuh). Anyway, the Toronto based designer search is hosted by Iman. The show started with the contestants getting to know each other at the Toronto Islands, where Iman arrived by yacht.

Just by announcing the prizes it became obvious that the Canadian version will be even trashier than south of the border: The winner will present a collection at Toronto Fashion Week and will be able to sell the work at Winners.
Out of the 13 designers, 6 are based out of Toronto, some of them had a lil’ boutique on Queen Street.

I have the feeling that I am going to be a bit addicted to the trashiness. Iman acted like a robot (always a plus), looking totally airbrushed in some of the segment trailers. And I enjoyed her tagline, which she got to use quite often in the first episode as two designers got Auf’d:
“Sometimes in fashion, you just don’t measure up.”

It’s a big day in perfume commercials. First we have the ad for M by Mariah.
“The commercial (…) features Mariah in a private sunset paradise & promises to deliver all the warmth, sensuality and glamour that Mariah and her fragrance, exude.”

Second, here is the David Lynch directed Gucci by Gucci clip:

In November 2002 we traveled to Tierra del Fuego / Feuerland. We went there on our way from Chile and took a twelve hour bus ride from Puerto Natales via Punta Arenas to Ushuaia.
It must have been in Ushuaia, at the small Yamana Museum were I found the postcards below. The museum shows the geological origin of Tierra del Fuego, the way of life of natives (there were four groups: Yamana, Alakaluf, Selk’nam and Haush), and the extinction of the local people through murder and infectious diseases brought by Europeans.

By 1911, only around 300 Selk’nam lived in reserves. Two Christian missionaries were established to provide housing and food for the natives. In spite of the help, Selk’nam were unable to survive without their traditions and lifestyles. A bigger part of the population died because of measles in 1925. The last ethnic Selk’nam died in the 1960/70 (sources give different names and years).
The pictures were taken by Martin Gusinde, a German missionary and Ethnologist. During 1918 to 1924 he traveled to Tierra del Feugo four times and studied the Selk’nam. Therefore, the culture of the Selk’nam is well documented in his 1000 pages strong book. His writing came under criticism later on as it is believed that especially the chapters dealing with religion and family values have not been unreflected from his own contemporary beliefs. However, Martin Gusinde was the first and last Ethnologist who studied the Selk’nam culture as a whole.
The male initiation ceremony of the Selk’nam called Hain was held for several months of the year and different groups came together to celebrate. Young men were brought to a hut were they were thought in myths. The ceremony included rituals in which the young men had to prove their endurance and strength.
The highlight of the festival was the appearance of spirits, actually adult male Selk’nam disguised as such. Each of the spirits had it’s own character. Some of them were there to scare women, others appeared for entertainment. Later on, the real identity of the spirits was revealed to the young men.
The last Hain was held in one of the missions in 1923, and it was photographed by Martin Gusinde. The photos depict various spirits.

I enjoyed the first Hulk movie directed by Ang Lee. Apparently, Marvel thought it had a disappointing performance and decided to give the comic adaptation another try. The new version, The Incredible Hulk, is currently being shot in Toronto.

Overly excited, I entered the department store. I must have looked kind of lost as I hastily walked around the perfume counters. One sales lady noticed my despair. She asked me: “Can I help you with something?”
I had not completed my question when I saw the M by Mariah flacon in her hand but I continued anyway: “Yes, I’m looking for Mariah’s fragrance.”
The woman, well in her 60s replied laughingly: “I am Mariah. Don’t I look like her? (Short break) Well, maybe 40 years from now.” Absolutely, I said.
She directed me to the Mariah counter, “Is it for a young lady, my dear?”
“That would be me, I am right here.”
As you may remember, M has top notes of marshmallow and sea breeze accord, a heart of Living Tahitian Tiare and gardenia and a drydown of sheer amber, patchouli and Moroccan incense.
It’s such a lovely scent. I’m on cloud marshmallow.

On my last night in the UK, Prince played the aftershow. I’m stoked.
The concert started with band member Shelby J. on lead vocals for a good half hour, performing covers. The opening song being Honky Tonk Woman, during which Prince struts on stage, wearing a light yellow suit with a hood attached to the jacket, gold chains, black hair band. He’s orchestrating the band, who seemed to be in a playful mood.
After a short break, Prince takes over the vocals and sings a couple of songs from his most recent album before launching into such classics as When U Were Mine and a rock version of Anotherloverholenyohead with pieces of Rock Lobster thrown in. The first encore is 3121, which sounds so much better live.
After another encore, I took the boat back to the West End.
I’m now on my way to the airport for my flight to T.O.
Prince is playing six more nights in London.

As the Prince weeks on produzentin.com are coming to an end, I thought this might be my chance to sneak in a story about one of my favourite record covers, the Sign ‘O’ The Times single. Released by Prince in February 1987 it was the lead single for the album of the same title.
At that time I was very nervous when a new Prince single or album was released, especially if it was the lead single revealing the new Prince look.
This was before the internets hit the streets and therefore, or maybe because I was living in a small village in Germany, not much was known about the new record or look. So, I made my way to the record store on the day of the release and there it is: Sign “O” The Times.
For a moment, I was very surprised. Did he really do drag? On a closer look and by flipping the cover it was clear that the woman’s styling was done with Prince in mind. Hilarious. But who was this person and why is she on the cover of the new Prince single? I was desperate. Maybe the video would be more helpful. I was so disappointed when I saw the video for the first time. No Prince sighting during the whole video, only text rolling left and right and up and down. Times.
The album was finally released in April 1987 and it basically continued the theme: Prince wears peach and black. For the Sign ‘O’ The Times tour it would later read on the tickets: “Wear something peach or black”.
The woman on the cover is Cat Glover. It was her introduction into the Prince world. As a member of the band she joined the Sign ‘O’ The Times and Lovesexy tours and is featured in a couple of videos, like Glam Slam and I Wish U Heaven. Her raps can be heard on Cindy C. (of the Black Album, the rap was originally written by Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley and included on Music is the Key) and Alphabet St.
Years later, I read an interview with Cat (can’t find the magazine anymore) that Prince and her thought it would be fun if Cat would be on the cover dressed as him. Easy.
By the way, the B-side was written by Prince as he was challenged by Sheena Easton who thought he could not come up with a song to the title of La, La, La, He, He, Hee. It’s a 10 minute funk workout with a dog barking drum pattern about a sexually charged romance between a dog and a cat.

Last weekend Toffi and I went to the big arena Prince show. It seemed like it was sold out, around 20000 people. The stage in form of his trademark symbol is set up in the middle of the venue. We were in the fifth row directly at the point of the symbol.
I was especially happy to hear Controversy and If I Was Your Girlfriend. During 1999 Prince, to make the audience sing along, jokingly asks: What’s the name of this song?
Even more exciting than the big show are his aftershows. During his 21 nights in London, an aftershow is happing every night, although it is not announced whether or not he’ll be there.
He played the aftershow last Friday, so Toffi and I had the feeling he would not play the aftershow on Saturday. He didn’t. His band played and there are great musicians but the jazztrumentals were kind of heavy on us.
To make sure I would get another Prince filled aftershow, I bought tickets for 3 shows that are happening before I go back to Toronto. The first was this Friday. Again jazzstrumentals only. No Prince.
Finally, yesterday night, Prince and the band performed. They came on stage at 1 am and rocked the house from the very first minute. The audience was on a very high energy level too, singing along for most of the songs. They played a few cover versions, including What Have You Done For Me Lately by Janet.
For the encore Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas joined the band and rhymed CIA with KKK. He always reminds me of a jumping jack. Too soon, the house lights went on, the dj started playing again. About 5 minutes later, half of the audience had already left, people are screamingly running back to the stage: Prince and the band are back.
They launch into a guitar heavy version of Red Headed Stepchild, an unreleased song that Prince had written for his former protege Tamar. At this point the audience went totally nuts, jumping up and down during the whole song, singing the refrain.
Wish me luck for this Thursday night, my last aftershow (for now).

We love all things Mama here at produzentin.com like Party Mamas and of course Lil’ Mama. She came straight out of Brooklyn and had that poppin’ Lipgloss.
Now, she lives in a chateau. Chateau Mama. Lil’ Mama has a new video with the title that looks like she took it from math class: G-Slide / Tour Bus. It’s a fun little ditty from the forthcoming album Voice of the Young People.

p.s. Please don’t ask why suddenly it’s “we” at produzentin.com. We don’t know either.

September 7 is the UK start date for A Bucket o’ French and Saunders airing on BBC1. The comedy TV show will feature classic and new sketches by the duo. According to a recent interview French & Saunders seem be parting ways after their Farewell tour next spring.
No time to cry, though. Both of them have new shows lined up. The Life and Times of Vivienne Vyle by Jennifer Saunders sounds especially promising. It is described as a black somedy, show-within-a-show following the adventures of TV host Vivienne Vyle (source). One more good thing: Showcase Canada is premiering the series September 2nd.

Crybaby is a Mariah treat from 2000 that I listened to on my way to the countryside today. I remembered the video and had to watch it the minute I came back to my place.
Taken from the double A sided single with Can’t Take That Away (Mariah’s Theme), Crybaby is not exactly one of her high charting hits. It’s got a classic video nonetheless and is a fan favourite.
The video is mostly a 1 to 1 (ist nicht vorbei) visualization of the lyrics and has a couple of Mariah diva moments.

“So it’s 5 am
And I still can’t sleep”

“Took some medicine
But it’s not working”

“Late at night like a little child
Wandering ’round alone
In my new friend’s home
On my tippy toes”

“Sipping Bailey’s Cream
By the stereo
Trying to find relief
On the radio”
It gets really dramatic after this point: There is lots of spillage and broken glass. Oreo’s are cracking on the floor, nail polish is dripping. Absolutely Crybaby. Watch it now.

I leave my place at around 9 to walk to the cinema to see The Godfather of Disco (trailer) at its UK premiere. As I arrive at the venue I see Mel Cheren head into the theatre. And just by chance I sit right next to him during the screening. The film is loosely based on Mel’s autobiography and features lots of interviews. Apart from Mel’s story, I found the interviews with Junior Vasquez (of all people) and Kevin Hedge of Blaze (he cute) most interesting. Also, it was very sad to see some of speeches that were held during Larry Levan’s funeral service.
After the documentary, I said hi to Mel and the director, Gene Graham. Now, let’s hope they’re getting some good distribution for the movie, that you can see it.
Then I rushed across town to get to the Prince afterparty. As Toffi is coming over next weekend and we’re heading to a Prince concert, I didn’t want to spoil the big arena experience and decided not to go to one of the main shows before. Although, Prince does not perform at every afterparty, I was very optimistic.
So, I get there at a quarter to one. 15 minutes later Prince hits the stage. Dressed in a red suit, red hat with big red feathers on top. His keyboard is set up in the middle of the stage and he starts with two Stevie Wonder cover versions, Superstition and Higher Ground, before moving on to A Love Bizarre. The audience goes crazy. He does back up vocals for Marva King on the Chaka Khan cover of Sweet Thing. Then, The Ballad of Dorothy Parker.
Most of the songs feature saxophone solos by Maceo Parker, of James Brown and Parliament/George Clinton fame.
The whole atmosphere on stage is quite relaxed. At one point Prince sings:
“Learn to work the toilet seat – If it’s up – Put it down” (from the new song, The Rules)
And gets the audience to repeat the lines.
A couple of classic covers follow, like Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin). Prince and the band leave the stage at 2:30 am.
Just one more thing, when he first got on stage, I thought he had scarfed his face just like in the old days. That would have been the icing on the cake.
Watch this site as it turns into a Prince fan page.

Caking Night by Homer Sykes
Currently in an exhibition at Tate Britain
“Caking Night in Dungworth (1974) was shot in the Royal Hotel, Dungworth, Yorkshire, a small village on the outskirts of Sheffield. The “caking” usually took place on 1 November. (It was a local tradition associated with All Souls’ Day, where “soul cakes” were offered to poor Christian neighbours.) Competitors concealed their identity by wearing a mask or fancy dress, which by tradition had to be of local significance. Having paraded silently from lounge to public bar and back again so their voices didn’t give their identity away, the competitors went upstairs to be judged. In this picture the judging had taken place and one participant, still disguised, was supping a pint of beer through a straw. I liked the neat surreal nature of the disguise. His gloves contrasted with the couple in their woollen jumpers, slacks and pointy collars. Caking night no longer takes place.” (source)
It reminds me a bit of Newfoundland Mummers, whom I find just as much intriguing.

As you may have noticed, once in a while, I like to bring you news from the amazing world of fizzy drinks. So, one of the first things I discovered in London is Coca-Cola with Orange. The limited edition fizzy in the orange bottle just caught my attention. So yummy.
Now, I can’t wait for Fanta with caffeine in a brown bottle.
Somehow, I can’t stop thinking about Mezzo Mix. Anyhow, I’d rather have Coca Cola with Orange. It isn’t limited for no reason, right?
While I’m at it, I’m still wondering why Pepsi Cucumber was launched in Japan only. I think it would go perfectly with British Cucumber Sandwiches.

It’s confession time, again.
I’m a little bit excited to go to a couple of Prince concerts in the weeks ahead. You probably heard that he is playing the O2 Arena in London (the former Millennium Dome) for 21 nights this August and September. I’ve been reading reviews of his first 4 shows like crazy. Of course, the people on the Prince message boards praise each concert over the last.
While reading the forums I came across an entry were the fans posted lists of the Prince concerts they had attended. They also denoted front row views with a little *. And I thought I had been to a lot of Prince concerts. Remember: there is always a bigger nerd.
I am fully aware that I am dating myself with this list, but whatev, here is the nerd fest:
27-08-1988 Frankfurt – Waldstadion – Lovesexy Tour
07-06-1990 Hamburg – Alsterdorfer Sporthalle – Nude Tour
12-06-1990 Berlin – Waldbühne – Nude Tour
31-05-1992 Berlin – Waldbühne – Diamonds & Pearls Tour (I’m not sure about this one)
03-06-1992 Frankfurt – Festhalle – Diamonds & Pearls Tour
31-08-1993 Paris – Palais Omnisport de Bercy – Act II Tour
01-09-1993 Paris – Palais Omnisport de Bercy – Act II Tour
25-11-1994 Berlin – Tränenpalast
04-03-1995 London – Wembley Arena – Gold / Ultimate Live Experience Tour
05-03-1995 London – Wembley Arena – Gold / Ultimate Live Experience Tour
07-03-1995 London – Wembley Arena – Gold / Ultimate Live Experience Tour
23-08-1998 Zürich – Hallenstadion – NewPowerSoul Tour
22-12-1998 Frankfurt – Festhalle – NewPowerSoul Tour
13-10-2002 Frankfurt – Festhalle – One Nite Alone Tour
19-10-2002 Berlin – ICC – Festhalle – One Nite Alone Tour
I think my favourite concert was at Tränenpalast in Berlin. He played a 2 hour+ set after his 5 minute performance at the MTV Europe Awards. There were only about 300 people in attendance and my friend Yvonne and I were standing in the front row.
Maybe I’m thinking of this concert so fondly just because Yvonne and I had to work hard for this: We were standing at the entry for three hours, pressed against iron bars. Through the Prince fan base we had heard about the “secret” show and got in line at 10 pm, even before the MTV awards were over. Finally, the doors opened at 1 am. After we waited for another hour, Prince got on stage and blew the house down. He even spoke German: “Kaputt!”, referring to a mic that was quickly replaced.
I think it took days to get that stupid grin off my adolescent face.

Prince during a Nude Tour concert (source).
I’m still in love with the pattern of the suit.
I met my friend Yvonne on the local bus to the Nude Tour concert at Waldbühne in Berlin. Taking the seat next to her I said: “I want to be front row and you?”. She was in. Together, we ran down the steps of the arena, landed in the 2nd row and had a blast.

Thank you Margot.
To battle the heatwave I spray my face with Toning Floral Water by Stella McCartney every 5 minutes. It’s one of the eight products from her skincare line Care. The Toning Floral Water contains green tea, linden blossom and cornflower extracts. The smell bewitches my nose, so lovely. To get an extra chilling sensation, I keep the spray in the freezer. My skin says: “Thank you” every time it gets another soothing hit.
“All products certified organic and ecological.”
I bet they contain no fur.

Hybrids caught my attention when I watched Napoleon Dynamite drawing a liger. The cross between a male lion and a female tiger is pretty much Napoleon’s favourite animal. Supposedly, they are the biggest cats in the world. I’m really intrigued by the whole wiki entry on ligers:
While male ligers are sterile, female ligers are fertile, and they can reproduce. Because only female ligers and tigons are fertile, a liger cannot reproduce with a tigon.
If a liger were to reproduce with a tiger, it would be called a ti-liger, and if it were to reproduce with a lion, it would be called a li-liger.

Napoleon’s drawing of a liger
Recently, I discovered the Zorse, you guessed it, a cross between a zebra stallion and a horse mare. An extremely hybrid Zorse called Eclyse lives at Safaripark Stukenbrock near Bielefeld, Germany.
Of course there is a video of Eclyse. Watch it, please.

Mary Messhausen and I needed some time off. So when our gingerheaded photographer friend Kyle offered to take us to his cottage right by the water, it sounded like the perfect opportunity to leave the busy city behind.
When we arrived at the cabin we found that run-down raft laying by the lakeside. In a heartbeat we hopped on the makeshift vessel. After the first excitement wound down and the fishing was done, we totally chilled out on the raft. So chilled out that we fell asleep.
After what must have been at least an hour we woke up and could barely see the coast. We felt like the biggest gaytards ever.
Watch the desperation unfold after the jump.

This looks more like a link dump than charts. Please bare with me.

- The Brand New Heavies – Let’s Do It Again (Kenny Dope O-Gutta Remix) – Dope Wax
After the remixes for “I Don’t Know Why (I Love You)“, here’s another stomper.
- Grand High Priest – Mixdown – Strictly Rhythm
One of the first new releases on the relaunched Strictly Rhythm label. This instrumental track is a thunderstorm of hand claps and cowbells. Another highlight on the sampler is Quentin Harris feat. Cordell McClary – U Don’t Know. Both songs are now available on separate records, too.
- Marcus Mixx – Without Makeup (Ron Hardy Mix) – Let’s Pet Puppies
More Chicago house. Just recently found this record of previously unreleased Ron Hardy mixes. The label caught my attention: Chicago without Makeup. Dark handclaps.
- Feist – My Moon My Man (Boys Noize Classic Remix) – EMI
- Roisin Murphy – Overpowered (Seamus Haji Remix) – EMI
- Simian Mobile Disco – I Believe (Prins Thomas Diskomiks) – Wichita
- CSS – Let’s Make Love and Listen To Death From Above (Hot Chip Remix) – WEA
Very dramatic Hot Chip mix that turns around half way through.
- Tracey Thorn – Raise the Roof (Cagedbaby Remix) – EMI
- Osunlade – Queen’s Battle – Strictly Rhythm
From the Osunlade album. “Get that shit off my face.”
- Justin Timberlake – Love Stoned (Justice Remix) – Jive
I heard Final Fantasy did the strings on that one. No? Anyway, can’t wait for a live version by Owen.
- 2raumwohnung – Ja (Just Us Remix) – It Sounds
The lyrics make me cringe but the La Koehncke mix makes it all good.
- Chin Chin – Appetite (Chicken Lips Extended Vocal Mix) – Dialect Recordings
- Snax – Honeymoon’s Over (Konrad Black Remix) – Fine Music
Maybe I even like the original version better, not sure.
- DJ Camacho – Me (Original Demo Mix By D Camacho) feat. Janae Jordan – 157 Shelter Records
“I’d like a man not a boy who thinks he can understand what it is to be with a woman like me.”
- Prince – Future Baby Mama – Columbia
I like that Future Baby Mama. I bet you want to listen to the full song after you listened to that clip. Please.

I recently discovered a new TV show. Party Mamas. I think it’s a great show on the Canadian Slice channel, which goes by the tag line: Slice is my Vice.
So, Party Mamas. I couldn’t do a better job with wrapping the show’s concept into one sentence:
“Party Mamas, follows out-of-control mothers as they plan over-the-top extravaganza parties for their children.”
Here are a just couple out of a myriad reasons why Party Mamas is so good:
- Everyone just likes to say Party Mama
- By saying Party Mama everybody envisions how he or she would be an out-of-control Party Mama
- The Party Mamas run into a fit with just simple things going wrong, for instance, the request for reserving a table at a restaurant was not met and all the tables are occupied by Fatso Mamas. Party Mama turns red and screams at the waiters without hesitation.
- The show is so scripted, you forget it’s a reality show
- At the end, the spoiled brats say something like “That was the best party I ever had. It was amazing”
I especially adore episode 7 where Party Mama Dena throws a Circus themed Bat Mitzvah party for her daughter Natalie.

Party Mama: I love to go to the spa, it’s important. I love to do my yoga in the morning. I am always late. I didn’t get the being-on-time gene.

Child: I decided that it was my life, my party, my Bat Mitzvah, and I wanted to buy the dress – so I bought the dress.

At the food tasting.
Child: This is disgusting.
Dad: This is the greatest beef in the world
Child: I thought that they should let me have what I wanted. I am a vegetarian and all my friends are. I want broccoli, asparagus, carrots
Party Mama: You can’t just have vegetables. Natalie is not in charge of what is served at the Bat Mitzvah, I am in charge.

Mir wern kei Schlangefrau uff de Party ham.

Party Mama: We are not having a contortionist at this Bat Mitzvah party. It will not happen. They wear skimpy clothing and I was worrying certain parts could be exposed. I’m at my breaking point. I have to call my therapist now.
Watch episode 7 for the full Party Mama drama.

This is a big confession: I gave away my old shabby desk without having a new one. Sometimes I even have to blog sitting on the floor. How desperate can it get? I’ve been looking for a tiny table for weeks to get me out of this predicament…
…finally, here is my cure: the Nelson Swag Leg Desk.

Blogging would never be the same
I already came up with some very creative ideas on how to collect money:
- do a fundraiser
- ask all you wonderful readers to donate one effin dollar (I would have the desk in no time, no?)
- get over it, stop whining and dish out the dough
Wouldn’t the desk look good with my couch?
I feel like I can never blog again sans the swag desk.

In anticipation of the upcoming Simpsons movie a couple of 7-Eleven stores in the US and one in Canada have been transformed into Kwik-E-Marts. The Canadian store is near Vancouver, in Coquitlam. Luckily, all the Simpsons products are available at most of the 7-11 stores.
So today, I went up the street and got myself a six-pack of Buzz Cola and the tasty Krusty O’s cereal. Now, all I have to do is create my own Simpsons character.

Mariah sang a couple of songs at One Mighty Party, the first gay and lesbian festivities at EuroDisney. As you might know, I am not a big fan of candids, but this one is good. For various reasons. One being the butterflies on her Mercedes.

I’ve finally recovered from the weekend, but there is one more story to tell. Mary and I went to see Martha Wash at the Pride main stage. It was my first time seeing her live and I was very excited.
From the moment the stepped on the stage to the very last drip of It’s Raining Men (alright, I could live without this song) I thought she is the best ever. Her voice is just amazing. The audience went crazy after the first note she sang. When I saw her dress I told Mary: Please remember this very well, I would like to have a Martha outfit.
After the second song, she took her heels off and said: “I sing better with my shoes off.”
You just have to adore her.
I think this was the set list:
Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)
Everybody Everybody
Give It To You
Carry On
It’s Raining Men
Earlier:
Dancin’ Wheels
Martha, I Love You

Friday night, Mary, Margot, Alex and I had tons of fun at The Beaver and The Gladstone. We hopped back and forth between places. Have a look at our Pride tour below.

All hell broke loose when I grabbed Shanda’s oily legs

Mary and her new bf, The Juan Maclean
Mary told him: My name is Mary Messhausen, but you can call me Messy.
Next thing, she got his room number.

He was so kind to offer me a look through his glasses.
What I saw wasn’t ugly.

Here a couple of pictures of the performances from the fundraiser for Magic, Mystery, or Matrix: A Romance of Many Membranes.
We were all flabbergasted by Karen’s carnivorous cave woman outing.
There was also a hot strip by Chris, including his favourite foods, bell peppers and sausages (you can’t go wrong with that).
