More Than 25 Hours

My friend Michael Dreher did the interior design for the new 25 Hours Hotel at Hanauer Landstrasse in Frankfurt. Michael invited me to a tour of almost all the wonderful 49 rooms. Here are a few of the design highlights.

Don’t Tell Mama

I’m back in Frankfurt for a few weeks. On my first jet-lagged night, I went to Don’t Tell Mama, Alex Sinclair’s new party at Im Bett, just around the corner from S.

It was so good to hear Miss Viola dj. After Mama, at 5 am, we went to have an early morning drink at S. All in all, it was a wonderful night with Sabs, Bits, Nancy, Superschum (I think he needs to update his blog), Alex and Isa.

I’m happy to be back.

Make Like A Fairy, Baby

The fine folks of the wonderful, Paris based Fairy Tale magazine asked me for an interview. Boy, was I surprised when I got the questions for their FOTO issue. I never thought I could answer all of them, especially the ones regarding pictures and photography. Huuuuh.
But then, there were a lot of Mariah questions, I finally felt at home. And some concerning Madonna. And even more questions about Toffi in Montreal.

Ein bestimmter Moment

FT: Gehen wir einmal vom reinen Bild aus und lassen den künstlerischen Faktor dabei ausser acht. Was bedeutet das Bild generell? Zeigt es das Leben in einem bestimmten Moment, bildet es also direkt ab, oder zeigt ist es wie das Leben in einem Moment sein könnte oder sollte?

produzentin: Ein Bild, eine Fotografie, ist für mich eine unstillbare Quelle der Inspiration. Manchmal gebe ich den Bildern Namen: “das Lustige”, “das kleine man nehme”, “wasted” oder auch “Beauty, beauty, look at me”. Und wenn sie dem Dialog standhalten, dann sind sie gut und zeigen die Realität, die sie mit dem Namen bekommen haben.

FT: Sind die Bilder in dem Moment in dem sie gezeigt werden Realität geworden und die Situation genau die, die auf dem Bild zu sehen ist?

produzentin: Für mich werden die Bilder sofort zur Realität. Ich finde so kleine Fotostrecken mit Stars oft ganz gut, in denen sie posieren. Dass zeigt eine Realität, so wie es sich der Star oder der Fotograf vorgestellt hat.
Daher wünsche ich mir oft, ich würde keine Paparazzi Bilder mehr sehen (und ich versuche sie auch zu umgehen), die machen die Posen kaputt. Die Paparazzi Bilder sind keine Realität. Ausser, wenn eine Star die Paparazzi bezahlt, dass ist etwas anderes, darauf sollte aber bei den Bildern hingewiesen werden.


FT: Auf dem Cover zu ihrem Album “The Emancipation of Mimi” sieht Mariah sogar aus wie Beyonce. Auf “Rainbow” sah sie noch anders aus. Wie hat sie das gemacht? Ich meine, man wird doch nicht so einfach Beyonce, oder?

produzentin: Ich war sehr geschockt, als ich das Mimi Cover zum ersten Mal sah. Ich hatte grosse Befürchtungen, dass die Musik dementsprechend sein könnte.
Mittlerweile denke ich, sie musste den Beyonce Trick anwenden: Also auf dem Cover wie Beyonce aussehen, um die Käufer zu täuschen und anschliessend mit der Musik faszinieren.

FT: Wäre es nicht einfacher gewesen Beyonce um ein altes Foto zu bitten?

Mariah: Ansich eine sehr gute Idee, aber ich glaube, es wäre nach hinten losgeggangen, wenn Beyonce gemerkt hätte, dass Mariah mit dem alten Beyonce Bild mehr Alben verkaufen kann als sie selbst. Womöglich hätte Beyonce auch noch Jay-Z verboten, für Mariah zu rappen.

Today is a good a day in more ways than one.
Here is one reason: produzentin can put one more article in her press clippings folder. I think I might need a PR assistant that lends me a hand with these meticulous tasks soon, like any minute now.

Actually, It Is Two Movies In One

By popular demand, here is my Apocalypto post.

This was the first Mel Gibson movie I saw. When Kevin invited me to join him for the press screening I happily agreed, I thought I’m going to be in for a treat in fantasy language. So not. No fantasy blabbering here, however the Yukatek Maya kind of did the trick for me.

The film has a lot to offer: a man is forced by his friends to eat tapir balls (very disgusting, I know. It happens within the first 10 minutes of the film, right then I knew, this is going to be good), a woman has a water birth (I love the German word Unterwassergeburt) and in the zenith of the film, we get a total eclipse of the sun.
What more can you ask for?

Most violent scene human to human:
Men are sacrificed in the name of the Maya god. Their hearts are ripped out.
I didn’t want to see all the veins.

Most violent scene human to animal:
A tapir is killed and the innards are shared between the hunters. As I mentioned above, one guy is tricked into eating the balls. Turns out later, they aren’t an aphrodisiac.

Most violent scene animal to human:
A panther, with his mouth open wide, jumps into the face of a man and enjoys his dinner. I closed my eyes.

I haven’t seen so much blood and violence in a movie for a very long time, maybe ever.

So, how does this sound? When are you going to see the Apocalypto?

A Woman in Trouble

Inland Empire, the new movie by David Lynch has its theatrical premiere in New York and LA in the coming weeks. The 1 minute trailer to the entirely shot on digital video, 3 hour movie is finally online, though it does not work for me on the film’s official site. Try youtube.

According to Lynch, “it’s about a woman in trouble, and it’s a mystery, and that’s about all I want to say about it”. And that’s all I want to know about the film before I see it. I’m hoping for a total mind-bender.
Anyway, as the film is distributed by Lynch himself, I don’t know when the Toronto premiere will be. Hopefully soon.

“One of the first things he (Lynch) did to promote it was cause wild traffic on Sunset Boulevard by sitting out there with a real cow and a sign petitioning an Oscar Nomination for Laura Dern, who indeed gives the performance of her life. Another sign read: “˜WITHOUT CHEESE THERE WOULDN”™T BE AN INLAND EMPIRE.”™ When Variety Magazine asked him why, he replied: “œI ate a lot of cheese during the making of Inland Empire.”
