Running With Bestsellers

The Devil wears Prada spent 6 months on the New York Times bestseller list. Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs (subtitled as a memoir) spent two and a half consecutive years on these charts.

So, it might come as no surprise that the movie trailer to Running with Scissors gave Toffi and me more giggles than the whole Devil wears Prada film.

Scissors is about Burroughs’ teenage years, starting at age twelve. The child is sent to live with his mother’s psychiatrist Dr. Finch when his parents separate and his mother comes out as a lesbian.

The trailer starts with the cute lines:

my allowance

Augusten: I polish my allowance.
Dad: But why, Augusten, why?
Augusten: Because I like shiny things.

Obviously, the openly gay author must have had his coming out at a very young age. With its quirky humor and vintage look, the trailer reminded me a bit of Harold and Maude.

The film stars Annette Benning, Joseph Fiennes, Alec Baldwin, Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Cross as the main actor. It opens in North America on October 11 and in Germany on January 11.

In addition to all that, I had to like the trailer as it features one of my favourite songs by Elton John, Bennie and the Jets.

Think I’m In Love

cell phone's not dead, yet

Head over to Beck’s myspace and watch the trashy new video, Think I’m in Love, the first single from the forthcoming new album, which is produced by Nigel Godrich. Their previous work includes Sea Changes and Mutations. However, this record should have more hip-hop influences.

The next video is directed by Michel Gondry. The black-and-white clip for Cell Phone’s Dead has already been shot and is now in post production. It will look like a one-take video, but it will certainly not be one; there is a conscious effort to make the surreal real.
Very mysterious.

Road Trip: Niagara Falls, Part III

Annie Taylor became the first person to survive a trip down Niagara Falls in a barrel. Almost 105 years later, Nancy and I wanted to be like her. So we got our asses into a barrel and took a deep breath. We got a Polaroid taken, dried our clothes after the successful plunge and went back to Toronto.

There was nothing left to do after all the excitement.
Complete satisfaction.

Road Trip: Niagara Falls, Part I

After our short stop at Tim Hortons, Nancy and me arrived at the Niagara Falls. This is the first part of our day trip to the honeymoon capital of the world. Although I had seen the falls before I was as taken away by their beauty as Nancy.

Road Trip: Tim Hortons

Nancy is in Toronto visiting. Yesterday, we did a wonderful road trip. This is a mini extreme theme week: Nancy and Produzentin: The Road Trip.

Anyway, we had our first stop at a Tim Hortons near the highway (I mean, where else?). We love Tim Hortons and they loved us.

More on our road trip in the next couple of days.
Maybe we will hit your neighborhood soon.
Get ready.

I love Vignettes

Mariah’s Vignettes

I never heard about vignettes until yesterday but I love them. Apparently Mariah is shooting vignettes for her upcoming Adventures of Mimi tour and Spike Lee is directing. For me, this is a dream come true. One of my favourite directors and MC. The vignettes will make fun of Mariah:

Mariah: It’s kinda like a play on the diva image.
Spike: You know, about her tight dresses, brests hanging out, she had a nervous breakdown, all that stuff.
Mariah: Yes, Jack (her dog) is part of the vignettes.

Weeds

Mommy’s husband dies of a heart attack but she has to feed the kids and wants to keep the standard of living. She starts selling weed in the Californian suburbs.

That’s the set up for the tv series Weeds, of which I watched the first season on DVD recently. It has some cliches that I don’t want to argue about, still I love the humor and the stiffness with which the characters interact.
From the first episode on, I thought that Nancy (the mommy) was going to hook up with Conrad but to no avail.

Season one had its unexpected highlight when Conrad (Romany Malco, US born son of a West Indian family) stands topless in the kitchen. For no other reason than his immense level of handsomeness.

Ciara – Get Up

It sounds like 1, 2 Step and the video reminds me of Janet’s Rhythm Nation era with a bit of pumping skyscraper lights a la Kylie blended in. The clip is kind of long winded but I’m into it anyway. And I love how Cüara (that’s how I like to pronounce her in German) counts in Japanese during the break. Ichi, ni, san.

1, 2 step, get up

produzentin cuisine: Königsberger Klopse

Here comes another post in the never ending food week and today I have a special treat for you. It is the recipe to one of my favourite dishes. In German it is called Königsberger Klopse, in English it translates to the rather dull German Meatballs with Caper Sauce.

The ingredients (in English and German) to this hearty meal can be found after the pics. Some of the quantities are a rough guess, especially for the oatmeal. Just use as much so the meat is not too sticky. You will feel it, for sure. The capers are essential, use more if you like those.

I like to eat them balls with rice, although potatos might work, too.

Enjoy your meal!
Guten Appetit!

No balls yet
Put all the ball ingredients (1-8) into a bowl, the onions should be glassy steamed

Sticky stuff
Mix thoroughly by hand

Here we go
Form the balls, in German I call it drällern

9 balls
I get around 9 balls from this receipe. Boil them in c) vegetable or beef stock for 10 to 15 min.

Stir well
Prepare the roux (Mehlschwitze) using a+b) and blend in the c) vegetable or beef stock, which you used to boil the balls. Add d-f).

Almost done
Add the balls to the sauce and let them simmer for 10 min.

Voila!
Dinner is ready!

Balls
1) 1/2 pound ground pork
2) 1/2 pound ground veal
3) 3/4 cup oatmeal (I like to use oatmeal instead of breadcrumbs)
4) 1 small onion (steam onion until glassy)
5) 1 egg
6) Salt & freshly ground black pepper
7) Ground nutmeg
8) Paprika

1-2) 500g Hackfleisch halb und halb (Rind und Schwein)
3) 6 Esslöffel Haferflocken (I benutze lieber Haferflocken als Paniermehl)
4) 1 kleine Zwiebel (glasig gedünsted)
5) 1 Ei
6) Salz und frisch gemahlenen Peffer
7) Gemahlene Muskatnuss
8) Paprika

Sauce
a) 4 tablespoons melted butter
b) Flour
c) 3 cups vegetable stock or beef stock
d) 1/4 cup dry white wine
e) 1 tablespoon lemon juice
f) 4 tablespoons capers

a) 4 Teelöffel Butter
b) Mehl
c) 3/4 Liter Gemüse- oder Kalbfleischbrühe
d) 1/8 Liter trockener Weisswein
e) 1 Teelöffel Zitronensaft
f) 4 Teelöffel Kapern

Biz and the Jets

I just found this wonderful rendition of Bennie and the Jets by my man Biz Markie. It’s from Chris Rock Show a few years back. Biz does everything right during his performance and is on the floor at the end. Just look at his Mariah-like arm and hand gesture. This is pure joy and I was in tears after I watched it for the first time.

There is another version of Bennie by Biz Markie on the Beastie Boys Greatest Hits, The Sounds of Silence. It sounds like a live version, but the claps and audience might have been added in the studio, just as Elton John did it on the original. Anyway, it is kind of hilarious as he forgets the lyrics and babbles along.

If you haven’t seen any of the old school Biz Markie videos, there are plenty on youtube. My all time favourites are Let Me Turn You On and Just A Friend.

SexyBack by Justin, (I love Cake and Ice Cream)
I’m not sure how I feel about it. I like the cheesy samples. Yeah. Aaaahhh. Yes. JT has some off the hook filters on his voice. In German, teen magazine Bravo would say schräge Filter). This is always a good thing.

Lo-Fi-Fnk – Wake Up (Justus Köhncke Remix)
(hps has great selections, this time re-re-directed by the super Chantilly Bass)
Love it. This is my favourite Justus mix since Hot Chip’s Over and Over.

So Spring 2007

I am back in Toronto for today. Later tonight, friends will take us to a cottage north of Toronto. There will be a beautiful lake (which I don’t know the name of) and lots of bbq and sausage fun.

Below are the pictures I will think about all weekend.

I love the Bernhard Willhelm mens collection for Spring/Summer 2007. These are just two of my favourite outfits. And I need the polka dot shawl with knickerbockers. NOW! (more pictures, registration req. for full quality)

And then there is the painted by Mariah butterfly dog for the charity auction of the Aspen Filmfest (via). Very fetch!

At Moraine Lake

produzentin is on holidays in the breathtaking Canadian Rockies.

Yesterday, Superschum, H. and I took a canoe trip on the deep-teal colored, glacier-fed waters of Moraine Lake. When we rented the boat, the lady said, that I didn’t need a life vest, my cushions were big enough! I love her.

Moraine Lake is set in the Valley of Ten Peaks and for me, it is the jewel of the Rockies. I even sipped the ice cold water, it felt like drinking from a fountain of youth.

Summer Charts

I have to take a short break from the What produzentin eats theme week as I go on a holiday for a couple of days. I probably will have some very relaxing pictures later this week.

But first, here are my summer charts and another Larry Levan remix for your mp3 collection. I downloaded a mix of Winners by Manfriday in June. After a few listens I really wanted to have the vinyl of the song, so I orderd a copy on ebay. It turns out, the version on the official release is totally different, sounding more like a cheap 80ties dance track. Soon I found out, that this Larry Levan demo mix is only available on a bootleg 12 inch and on a japanese compilation CD. I still have to track down either of them. Anyway, enjoy.

What’s the good side of you

Oh, the World Cup has arrived at my crib. Superschum and H. are staying over for a few nights and they brought this adorable Nutella ball. I love it so much, guess my diet has to wait. Schum and H. made me watch my first World Cup game from start to finish, Germany vs. Argentina. I’m in love with Odo now (this was easy, right?). Make sure to read his A-Z.

sweet things

  1. Fox N’ Wolf – Claws Against Knives (Todd Terje Remix) – Kitsune
This is my summer hit. Squeaky vocals and bubbling beats. I wanted to post the song but I am afraid the lovely guys from Kitsune might sue my little ass. It’s on the Kitsune Maison 2 compilation. Here samples of the song here and here. Wow.
  2. Jamie Lidell – When I Come Back Around (Freeform Reform) – Warp
This is from his Multiply Additions remix album. After all the Jamie – Prince comparisons he finally gets a Prince beat in the mix: Raspberry Beret provides a perfect backdrop for the song.
  3. Man Friday – Winners (Larry Levan Demo Mix)
  4. Kirk Franklin – Looking For You – Gospocentric
I heard it first on the radio but didn’t know who it was. I wanted to have this song so badly as it re-sings the hook from Patrice Rushen’s disco classic Haven’t You Heard. Then I found it at fourfour.
  5. Jimpster feat. Diamondancer – A Love Like This – Freerange
This sounds like part 2 of Delano Smith feat. Diamondancer – A Message For The DJ (Jimpsters Red Light Remix). Diamondancer sings/reads her lyrics above the forward grooving Jimpster beats. Listen.
  6. Peaches – Downtown – XL Recordings
I haven’t figuered out which Prince beat she is sampling. Sounds a bit like Vanity 6 or Apollonia 6.
  7. Lisa Shaw – Let It Ride (Speakeasy Remix) – Naked Music
  8. Snax And Ianeq – Fill Me Up (M.A.N.D.Y. Edit) – Get Physical
  9. Christian Rottler – Feuer – Freundinnen
The song finally sees the light of day, I had the promo version for a while now and I still like the original singer-songwriter version best. The remixes are more in the electro vein. Listen to more Christian Rottler songs on his homepage.
  10. Only Freak feat. Rasiyah – Can’t Get Away (From Your Love) (Solid Groove Remix) – Freerange
