   Prince had his first number one debut on the billboard charts with 3121 and hence he has to be #1 on my charts, too. This is my favourite song from the album.
2. Colonel Abrams - Love on a Cutting Edge (Dance Vocal Mix) - Nardi
   Entrancing house record I discovered in New York.
3. Cajmere feat. Dajae - Say U Will (Original Mix) - Cajual #292
   The Green Velvet Vocal Mix (from Cajual #293) is rockier, I can’t decide which one I like best.
4. Kanye West feat. Twista & Keyshia Cole - Impossible
   New Kanye for Misson Impossible 3.
5. The National Trust - Kings and Queens - Thrill Jockey Records
   Malo pointed me to this fantastic record. I always fall for a little bit of that funky Prince sound. Love the cover and the title.
6. Jamie Lewis - It’s Over feat. Michael Watford (Main Mix) - Purple Music
   Classic Michael Watford vocals & lyrics. Buy it at Purple Switzerland.
7. Cheri - Murphy’s Law - Venture Records
   Piranhahead pressed this 12″ into my hands when we went to a used record store in Detroit. I hadn’t heard the 1982 hit. I instantly fell for the great opening lines: “I hate to tell you, but I got a bit of bad news - I don’t love you no more” and the speed up background vocals.
8. Tiga - The sultry songs from Sexor: Sir Sir Sir, (Far From) Home - PIAS
   I didn’t like the album when I listened to it a few weeks ago but now I’m into the sultry songs.
9. The Todd Terry Project - Weekend - various labels
   Cover of the Leroy Burgess classic. Fantastic & hysterical mid-90ties Todd Terry beats.
10. Journey Into Paradise: The Larry Levan Story - Rhino
    A new Larry Levan compilation with songs he spun and remixes he did.
11. Geiger - Talk To Me (from the Day 12″) - Firm
12. Goldfrapp - Ride a White Horse (Ewan Pearson Disco Odyssey Parts 1 & 2) - Mute
    15 min. of electro disco fun of which I like the first 6 min. best, guess this is Part I.
13. Jens Friebe - Lawinenhund (Egoexpress Remix B Goddamned Bunker Edit) - EMI
    Very techno for my taste, but anyway, it’s Jens Friebe. Most of the lyrics are stripped except for “Du warst begraben, in diesem gottverdammten Laden”. Handclaps.
14. Coldcut feat. Robert Owens - Walk A Mile In My Shoes - Ninja Tune
15. P!NK - Who Knew - LaFace
    This is the obvious choice for the next single off the new P!NK album. Very catchy. Just checked her site and she is shooting a video for the song! Wow, can’t wait.

Ich bin im Tran, schlafe manchmal ein, verpasse Teile des Wegs und des Gesprächs. Halb strategisch, damit ich nicht die ganze Zeit mit Andrej reden muss, er ist aufgeregt und betrunken, stolz zeigt er uns Almaty. Wir mussten schon mehrmals umsteigen, er hat Freunde mit Autos organisiert, die Besetzung wechselt. Wir werden in das jeweils spektakulärere Auto gesetzt.
Die Mädchen sitzen in den anderen Wägen. Andrej möchte nicht, das wir mit den Mädchen reden, er hat ein Programm vorbereitet, das wird durchgezogen, obwohl es dunkel wird und nebelig im Gebirge.

Wir sitzen in einem Geländewagen. Den Fahrer nennen sie „Small“. Es läuft russischer Gangsta Rap. Den Subwoofer haben sie Small letzte Woche alle zusammen zum Geburtstag geschenkt. Das sind also reiche Kasachen, denken wir. Wenn sie wüssten, daß wir zuhause noch nicht mal ein Auto besitzen, würden sie uns nicht so eine VIP Behandlung verpassen. Andererseits, als ich 19 war, hatte ich auch noch Freunde mit fetten Autos. Small ist höchstens 19, er muss schon reich sein, er wohnt im Gebirge, deswegen kenne er sich aus auf den Serpentinen, die er gerade hochbrettert. „He´s professional!“, sagt Andrej, „He feels his car.“ Das ist nicht beruhigend. Small fährt ein Rennen mit „Jew“, bei 150kmh reichen sie sich Zigaretten rüber.

Die Strasse wird mit einem mal eng und gerade, sie führt über einen hohen Damm, zu beiden Seiten fällt es steil herab. Darunter liegt das Tal von Medeo mit dem grossen Eisstadion. Für den Damm wurde Ende der 50er ein Berg gesprengt, er schützt Almaty vor Hochwasser zur Schneeschmelze.
Jetzt sitzt Andrej im anderen Jeep, oder nein wir sitzen jetzt im Jeep von „Jew“ und jetzt ist Volodja der Fremdenführer. Das ist mir lieber, Volodja steht nicht so unter Strom wie Andrej. Wir fahren weiterhin sehr schnell, der Motor heult, hoch auf den Schimbulak, die Ohren drücken, der Schimbulak ist 2500 Meter hoch. Oben ist der Skilift ausgeschaltet. Die Motoren der Jeeps bleiben an, während wir einen kleinen Spaziergang machen. Es sieht aus wie in der Schweiz oder wie in Aspen, und überhaupt kommt mir auch die ganze Situation, wie die Jugendlichen leben, international vor, abends Bier kaufen und irre Rennen fahren, an Orten, die sie so gut kennen, das es sonst nur langweilt.

„Do you like Speed?“, fragt Andrej, wir haben wieder getauscht. Er meint Geschwindigkeit. Er erzählt von einer Freundin, die so schnell gefahren sei in der Stadt, daß sie im zweiten Stock eines Hauses eingeschlagen sei. Ob wir die Stelle sehen wollten.
Die anderen aus dem Konvoi sind nach und nach verschwunden, draussen ist es jetzt dunkel und es regnet stark, die Strasse ist so schlecht, das nur Small noch weiter fahren kann. Small ist es scheinbar ganz egal, wo er hinfahren soll, willenlos fahrend zufrieden. Er nimmt eine falsche Abzweigung und plötzlich gibt es keine Strasse mehr, sondern eine Wiese, die Räder drehen manchmal durch, aber er holt uns souverän aus dem Brachland auf den Parkplatz. Das ist eine Aussichtsstelle, die Andrej uns zeigen wollte, von der aus man seine Stadt liegen sieht. Aber es ist zu nebelig, heute nur schwarze Nacht. Trotzdem ist Betrieb auf dem Parkplatz. Kein Mensch zu sehen, die Motoren laufen, beschlagene Scheiben, steamy windows! - wo sollen sie hin, wenn sie noch bis zur Hochzeit bei den Eltern wohnen müssen. Andrej wohnt allein, deswegen treffen sich gleich alle bei ihm, aber uns will er nicht mehr mitnehmen, „we have to do some business, I´m sorry.“

Wir sind zu alt, aber eigentlich froh. Insgesamt ist es schade, das wir nicht im Mädchenauto gesessen haben, sie haben R&B gehört und Alkopops getrunken.

Superschum

One of my very good friends from Frankfurt has finally started his own blog. I think he had his first ever blog post on my website back in March 2005, when he wrote about a Mariah TV interview. And by looking at his flickr page, I found out, that he sometimes wears a wife beater. That scared me, but maybe it was just a holiday mood.

I met Superschum for the first time at a gay happening in Mainz, going by the iconic name “Sommerschwüle”, many many years ago. We were young, gay and the dark of the night made us happy.

Last September, we took a trip to the Cote d’Azur. I’m not sure if it was romantic.

I’m still wondering why her website is called uhutrust. Where does the name come from? She comments on produzentin.com as “Michi”.

I was very happy when I found the reissue of the Walking Into Sunshine 12″ by UK group Central Line in New York. The 1981 hit has a special Larry Levan mix on the A-side.
The song was later sampled by LL Cool J for Jingling Baby (watch his party video, go ahead, baby).

Yesterday was wonderful weather in Toronto and I sang the lyrics all around town, today the rain is back. What did I do wrong?
